December is International AIDS Awareness Month.

Those of us who came of age in the '80s remember when AIDS first made the news. For many of us, the onset of AIDS marked a turning point: before AIDS, sex was something you could look forward to; after AIDS, it was something that could kill. Not only did AIDS kill with frightening efficiency, it did so in the most debilitating, horrifying, and dehumanizing way possible. For many, it was a death sentence.

Test Anxiety

Back in November, I had unprotected sex. He was a military guy, so naturally, I thought he was clean. We only performed the deed once, and then we both went on about our business. Fast forward to today, I'm a nervous wreck waiting for my test results. Early March, I got a UTI. It was the first one I'd had in years, so I knew something wasn't quite right. I went to my local clinic to get tested for the more common STIs, and in the process, the nurse tested me for HIV. That's when the panic set in....
