    Frustrating Appointment with the Hematologist

Hi all. I'm pretty new to this, but I'm so frustrated right now, that I thought that I'd give it a try. I've been having a bunch of problems for the past couple of years, like petechiae, bleeding gums, fatigue, aching knees and elbows, photosensitivity, illnesses every three months, inflamed right saliva gland since September, and on and on. I've had a bunch of different tests done, but the only one that's come back abnormal is my ANA blood test at a titer of 1:640. Recently I herniated a disc in my lower back and had an MRI scan done. My orthopedic surgeon became concerned after reviewing my MRI because he said that my bone marrow looks abnormal. His exact words were "this is very unusual and you need to get this checked out by a hematologist." He thinks that I need a bone marrow biopsy. So, yesterday I had an appointment with a hematologist. It was a disaster. He didn't even want to spend five minutes with me. Without asking me any questions, without even looking at my MRI films, and without even doing a single blood test, he told me that he was sure that I was just fine and booted me out of his office. He didn't even want to listen to what I had to say. He even rolled his eyes at me when I told him that I'd been sent by my orthopedic surgeon. I'm so frustrated and I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone think that it's worth getting a second opinion on? Sorry for the long post.

    Thanks,

    Launa

LEJ79, I hope your feeling better. I think you really need to get a second opinion ASAP. Dr's aren't infallable and yours sounds like he has problems of his own but don't let him screw up yours. ANY time you are unhappy with your medical care you should seek another opinion. I am speaking from experience. For example. My OBGYN told me that a mole I had had changed simple due to pregancy and not to worry. For four months I kept pointing out my concerns about the mole. I finally went to my primary, who promply biopsied it only to find I had a Type three maligant Melanoma. I had to have a chunk of my right side removed because I waited too long. Another time I sought out another dr. only to find my breathing problem was not bronchitis but multiple blood clots in both lungs. Take care Beth Aka Little Wonder

Thanks for your reply Beth aka Little Wonder. These problems have been going on for so long that sometimes I start to wonder if I'm crazy. So then, when a doctor like that treats me so badly, I get a little bummed out. Eventually common sense won over again though and I've made an appointment with another hematologist. I've also contacted my orthopedic surgeon and asked him to write a letter stating what it is that concerned him in my MRI films. That way I'll have something to take into the hematologist's office with me. Thanks for your pep talk. Take care.

I understand how you feel. I think you should definately go to another doctor because it is always better to have tests done. I am scared of tests myself. But tell your ortho, maybe he can send you to a better one.

Re: Frustrating Appointment with the Hematologist

Just a little update - I've made an appointment with another hematologist. I also got my orthopedic surgeon to write a letter stating why he thinks that something is wrong with my bone marrow. I faxed the letter to my new hematologist. At least I won't be accused of making it all up this time. I also got my primary doctor to send me my medical records so that I could also fax them to the new hematologist. As I was looking at my bloodwork, I noticed some interesting things. I had bloodwork done in May 2004 and again in October 2004. Both times my WBC was a bit low and my monocytes were a bit high. WBC was 4.3, then 4.0. Monocytes were 12, then 9. I realize that, although the WBC is a little low, it's not all that bad. I was wondering though...does anyone know if the slightly low WBC could be related to whatever might be wrong with my bone marrow? My orthopedic surgeon has recommended that I have a bone marrow biopsy done, but my appointment with the new hematologist isn't until May 24th. Thanks!
