    Re: bone cyst ubc

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to give us this information. We shall investigate it further in the hope it may help our son. At present, the bone graft has been fairly successful in halting the recurrence of the UBC but the last XR showed some area of bone yet to fill in with new bone growth around the graft. We are therefore awaiting a date for further surgery (more grafting??) as our Son is now at risk of fracture again. We hope your child is making progress and would love to hear your updates on how he is managing with this nightmare of a condition!

    Kind regards

    Michael and Kerri

My son was just diagnosed with a bone cyst. One thing I am curious about is most of these I have read about occur in the femur and his is in his Fibula, is this common? Anyone with any information I would love to hear from. My son is 11 years old. We got lucky and caught it in an x-ray due to persistant pain he was having in his ankle where the cysts is located at the bottom of the bone. The doctor said nothing about limiting activity, he is currently playing baseball, is this something he should continue until treatment?

    Re: bone cyst ubc

a bone cyst and a ubc are not quite the same- but a bone cyst can happen on any bone. my doctor basically said that we have abnomalites all over our body and that my son had the bad luck for it to be on a weight bearing bone
had my child have been playing sports the bone would have broken. i was told he was an accident waiting to happen. so i would think that your child might be the same. i recommend that you go to a childrens hospital if possible. good luck!!

    Re: bone cyst ubc

    Hi all,

This is a bit different to all of the other posts but i have hit a road block down here in Australia. I was diagnosed with UBC of the upper Femur in 1997. I was 12. In that year i went into surgery and had steriods injected into the cyst. Shortly after this i broke the bone from a small fall from my wheelchair. I had been playing sports continuously up until my diagnosis.

After the break i was put in traction for 3 months. The cyst healed well and i was able to resume full contact sports by about the age of 15. Unfortunately a few weeks ago i experienced pain in my hip (i am now 21). I knew exactly what it was. X-rays showed that the cysts were reforming and that i had a possible fracture already on the femur. I can still walk but it is pretty painful. I am no longer able to go to the childrens hospital and see my old specialist of 10 years. He was apprehensive about surgery that would affect my growth when i was younger... now i'm just wondering what types of surgery is available to me as an adult?

Lucky he has a private practice and i have an appointment in a month. As you can imagine i am unable to bear weight or drive. My life has practically stopped. I live at Uni and study so i just wanted to know if anyone had this issue around my age and how much the related surgery affected their lives as i cannot afford the disruption i had to endure when i was younger.

    Thanks all

    Patricia

    Re: bone cyst ubc

My 10-year old son just broke his Fibula playing dodgeball. When the Dr came in to break the news he also told us that there was a cyst that weakened the bone enough to cause the break. Looking at the X-Ray, the size of the cyst and the size of the bone itself, I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner since son played football last fall and baseball this spring! We have an appt with one of the local orthopedic surgeons on Aug 4th at which time we'll hopefully find out what kind of cyst we're dealing with. I would suggest to HADABALL that her son not continue with baseball and avoid the pain of a fracture and crutches. My son is NOT happy!

Update on my 10 YO son: He finally got his walking cast off on 10/23. We've made a total of 5 visits to the Orthopedic surgeon so far - not cheap I'm sure - and have to go back in Feb to see if the cyst has healed. It didn't look too good on the last X-ray, so my guess is that he'll have to have it cleaned out and filled in then. At least he can walk on it for now - thank God for small blessings! Hang in there all - I'll post an update in Feb.

Hi. My son went to the hospital last week and had x rays done. they found a bone cyst on his left femur. Any info you could give me about this would be much help. Since the hospital gives you the run around like "well i'm not an orthopedist or i'm not a radiologist" So I left the hospital with no info on this matter. Please any information would be a great help.

    Re: bone cyst ubc

My 10 year old son went through this trauma of UBC 18 months ago and so far he is doing fine playing soccer, basketball, etc... He had a big cyst on his right femur close to the growth plate. Fortunately there we was no fracture when he was diagnosed with UBC. We got multiple opinions from different doctors ( Steriod injections /Bone marrow/Bone grafting/...) and finally settled on Childrens hospital in Boston. We ended up doing a bone grafting and to be on the safe side a plate was attached with screws to prevent any fracture which was a possibility.

Now each case is different and the size and location of the cyst will determine the course of action. The main thing is to make sure the child has as NORMAL a life as possible and the parents do their HOMEWORK before making any decision.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. I felt the same way 18 months ago. You need to do your home work before you see any Orthopaedic doctors. First you have to make sure the cyst is benign. Then the size and location of the cyst will determine your options. You choice will be either steriods/bone grafting with hardware or if you are lucky even do nothing where it will heal by itself. You have to make sure the child can lead a NORMAL life. AS you know a fracture can affect the growth plate which could make things more difficult in fixing. Also make sure you take a second or third opinion before you decide your options. Good luck

    Re: bone cyst ubc

They recently discovered (quite by accident, in an x-ray done for another reason) a very large cyst in my daughter's right hip. The appearance seemed to suggest it was an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC, a more aggressive type than the UBC) and so she had surgery a month later to remove the cyst, which fortunately proved to be a UBC instead (bone grafting was also done at that time). Less than four weeks post-surgery she is able to walk without a limp and a casual observer would not notice anything out of the ordinary, though she can't do anything high-impact for at least three months, until the bone has gotten stronger. From all I've read, UBC's do eventually heal, but tend to cause more problems in younger patients (my daughter is 13) and in cysts in weight-bearing bones - especially the legs - due to fractures or growth arrest during treatment, which can cause the affected limb to be significantly shorter than the other. We were very fortunate that it was discovered when it was, as she's a gymnast and could have fractured her hip during practice or competition. We won't find out until the fall how well it's healing, but at least she's able to hang out with her friends this summer. The doctor indicated that it may recur, but probably only in small areas that won't require treatment apart from monitoring. I hope that turns out to be so and that all goes well for you.

    Re: bone cyst ubc

My son , 12 years old, was kicked by a horse in his right knee at the end of August. When the Doctor took the X-ray of the right knee, he also took a X-ray of his left. On the left side, they found a bone cyst ubc. He is going for surgery next week. They are going to clean out the cyst and then pack it with cadaver bone. The Doctor said that he will have to wait and see if he will need a metal plate. After reading your stories about recuperation time, I am very worried. He never said anything about that much time.He mentioned several weeks of PT, nothing more. What about pain after the surgery? How long a incision will he have?

    Thanks

    Melissa
