Hammertoe surgery pain after pin removal - PLEASE HELP!!!

I had hammertoe surgery on 29 November 2011 i also got my pins removed on the 6 January 2012, the pin removal itself was not sore at all. When i went to put my shoe on afterwards however i could not wear it. The nurse threw my surgical boot away so had to walk around in my sock which was not very nice! Its now the 11 January 2012 and i still cant wear a shoe as the tips of my toes where the pins were are still very very sore and tender. My toes are still swollen and bruised greatly and im a athlete so wanted to stay fit so went swimming yesterday and stubbed my toe of the bottom of the pool and swimming wasnt that sore itself but i did feel some shocks of pain when kicking the water. Is it possible to have broken my toes? or is normal not to be able to wear a shoe? and should i still have my surgical boot?
