Blood & mucus in stool with abdominal pain

    Someone help!

For the past few months, I have a terrible time using the bathroom and when I do, there is a lot of mucus on my stool and always bright red blood. I have abdominal pain a lot but here lately it is excruciating. Can someone please tell me if they have and these problems and what it is? I cannot afford to go to the doctor because of all the bills.

    Hi...
Where exactly is the abdominal pain, and what is the stool like (meaning skinny, hard and lumps, diarrhea, etc?) and is the blood on the toilet paper or around the stool in the toilet?

Michaels1...what is your question? Regarding diet, I'd suggest you add meat/eggs to your intake as protein, as well as probiotics.

What was the results of the stool samples?

Colitis basically means inflammation of the colon, which can sometimes involve the rectum or not. your diet, while may ease some symptoms, won't deal with your assumed colitis. You're best to have a colonoscopy done with biopsies to see where bleeding may be coming from.

Hemorrhoids do cause bleeding as does fissures...neither are an inflammation of the rectum or considered a colitis, but they can occur in conjunction with IBS or any form of colitis.

It's a difficult thing having issues with the digestive tract, but I urge you to see a specialist rather than a GP putting you through testing. A visual is the way to initially see what's happening.

Keep us updated how you're doing.

11 weeks ago had my first bm with mucus & blood & 4 weeks later after chips coke & coffee cigarettes it happened again mucus with blood & one week later same diet plus 1/4 zoloft it happened again i stopped zoloft & i was frequenting the toilet a bit more often then after experienced stomach churning noises & discomfort so i changed my diet completely including stopping milk & hardly even smoking no junk food or coffee & i had a stool test which came negative & 4 weeks later tonight after 2 days with no bm i had 2 normal bm but with the 3rd bm tiniest speck of blood in my mucus which i was able to tell after spreading it with tissue, i had taken a picture previously & shown a nurse about previous incidence & she said fresh blood, this time around if it wasnt due to my paranoia i would not have known, i have had some gas & feel like i need another bm & the only difference i have added cashews to my diet i think it may be the problem, i get the odd noise in stomach/cramp/discomfort as well but nothing like the beginning i suspect i have mild colitis, i just had a normal bm & have not experienced diahorrea, appreciate any assistance/advice as very concerned & am near mid 30s if that helps.

Re: Blood & mucus in stool with abdominal pain

If you have had a few days with no bms then went and after the third one with a spec of blood in mucus on the toilet paper, then I'd say it's possibly anal or rectal....either some inflammation or you have a hemorrhoid that might bleed or fissure that breaks open a bit, or diverticulitis that may bleed into mucus or possibly a polyp.

Foods you eat wouldn't cause you to bleed in the colon unless you already have inflammation and the tissue is already so fragile that you'd bleed...especially if it's sporatic, after constipation (which by the way could be a symptom of very mild inflammation that's limited in the rectum), hemorrhoid, diverticulosis, polyp, etc.

Please ask for a visual scope to be done....I'd suggest a full colonoscopy rather than just a sigmoidoscopy.

I have ulcerative colitis, and the bleeding was intense. My symptoms originally started with constipation, to diarrhea then diarrhea with bleeding. This did happen over a period of years before I was diagnosed. The specialist did a rectoscope, said that other testing such as stool samples, etc should be done to rule out other possibilities...and after a colonoscopy with biopsies, my diagnosis was consistent with UC.

It's a process of elimination, so rather than assuming it's colitis (which is a general term, sometimes even meaning IBS incorrectly)....get checked visually and with biopsies...at least you'll have a diagnosis.

Hi...oh, your anxiety is certainly understandable...I've been there, and It can sound serious if I bring up all the serious possibilities, but it can sound benign if I do the same. Going to worst case scenario is always first in line for most everyone.

Would you have a problem to go to the doctor and ask for a c-scope? at least you'll be checked out and have a good baseline if all is clear.

Does colon cancer run in your family? Does UC or Crohn's run in your family?

Thank you my grandma has diverticulitis and I think my other grandma I think has it as well, I remember when I had the 3 episode I felt like bubbling sort of feeling on the left side stomach rib cage area then it happened.

Re: Blood & mucus in stool with abdominal pain

What you could try is adding a fibre supplement to your diet....I use Metamucil capsules, but any generic psyllium capsules of 500mg would be the same. I started with one capsule with breakfast and after a few days added one to supper as well. I continued adding one capsule to each meal for a few weeks until I got up to 6 with each meal.
That will even out the peristalsis, exercise the colon, help lessen the spasming and soften/fluff the stool to make passing a bit easier in the event that it is a hemmie or fissure.

Under the left ribcage could possibly mean gas in the splenic flexure that could be trapped there. That could be from food (8 - 12 hours after eating something that tends to cause more gas.

You could keep a food diary....note the time you ate something and the time you have symptoms. It'll be difficult to note because food you take in stays in the stomach for up to 4 or even more hours.

Are you planning to get in to see a gastro doc?

To be honest I believe my symptoms are in the milder side even though I experience discomfort and my new diet has helped I am trying to stay away from medications and would like to beat this matter in a natural way and thank you for the great advice and would like to know how you won or control your battle.

Hi...what to you mean won or battle?

I HAVE Ulcerative Colitis, 27+ years since diagnosis. I'm on oral and rectal mesalamine...I'm relieved that it's limited in the location and has never spread beyond the original location.

I manage my disease. Food or medications or supplements or alternative treatments won't make it go away...it is what it is.

Since you have no idea what you have, you're imagining a condition and believing you can cure it through diet. You do worry about bleeding but have no idea where it's from. Any bleeding should be determined, especially since bleeding can possibly be from a polyp (some can be a precursor to cancer).

You will be remiss to ignore the symptoms.....and since you are afraid of the worst outcome, you should make the effort at this time to settle it. The reason is that the next time it happens, you may justify the why but worry still the same or more.
