    Chronic constipation, new symptoms

Hello all. I'll start out by saying that I already am set to see a doctor, I'm just looking for some insight because most of these issues are NOT new and nobody seems to be able to come up with a solution. I'm not sure if maybe I'm not asking the right questions, or if there's something in particular they should be looking for that they haven't already. This is kinda long so... I hope people will still read it :-/

I've been in and out of the doctor's office, very frequently and regularly, for a year and a half. It started when I began to get nauseated every day, sometimes out of the blue and nearly always after eating ANYTHING. Sometimes I would vomit, but it wouldn't relieve the nausea. My doctor first suspected my gallbladder, but I made a point to emphasize that I have no pain in that area, just extreme nausea. Every test possible for gallbladder dysfunction or disease has been done, and they've all come up negative. Most of these tests/scans, etc. were done last November/December. Nothing. In early December of last year I was hospitalized after experiencing crippling, excruciating pain in my abdomen. They said it was a fecal impaction. After three days, several enemas, and like a gallon of GoLytely (gross), I felt relief and got to go home. I was told to increase fiber intake, drink more water, and take light laxatives as needed.

So, I understand that regular use of laxatives can create other issues later on, so I sort of stayed away from those unless absolutely necessary. I've lost 30lbs (intentionally), I drink AT LEAST half a gallon of water a day and have been for quite a long time now, and I've changed my lifestyle to include regular exercise and a healthy, balanced diet with the recommended amounts of fiber.

Cue to last weekend. I realized that I hadn't had a bowel movement in quite awhile, but I also never had any urges to go. A couple days later, the agonizing pain came back. Spasms and waves of intense cramping, making me unable to walk or stand. Just excruciating pain, it was unbearable and worse than last time. I didn't want to go to the hospital because the last visit cost me over $12,000 when my insurance denied my claim. It took a couple home enemas but I managed to get what I assume was the impacted stool in question to release. It didn't seem like there was as much as there should've been after like two weeks, but whatever.

Now, I haven't had the urge to go in over a week again, when I try there is absolutely nothing, not even gas, and the discomfort is coming back. Nausea is persistent and awful as always, I vomited again on Saturday like I do several times a week. A couple enemas produced nothing except very small, greyish, mucusy looking stools that I've never seen before, and then nothing else. If I go down again with the extreme pain I will go back to the ER, but is there something I'm missing here? They didn't do any tests or look for the cause of the constipation at any time during the last year, and I'm wondering if there's anything I should discuss with my doctor in particular. The water, fiber, even laxative use has never made my bowel movements easy to pass, and they've been getting less and less frequent over the past few months. Constipation has been chronic since my episode last year. I have not had medication changes in the past several years and have never experienced constipation as a side effect. I'm just at a loss and don't know what to do.

    Any insight would be helpful!

    I feel for experienced same.
Try this. 1st thing in the morning drink hot water with a sliver of Lemon. Also take same in evening prior to bedtime.
Now go to your health food store & buy Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (Mothers brank) Take approx. 2 tbls, delute with water in a small container & down it. Use additional water to minimize the taste..its vinegar..
Also, try juicing. Invest in a nice juicer $200 +. Carrots, a fugi apple, 3-4 slices of organic beets & a couple of sticks of celery. I juice once evey four days (I place in a seal tight container & I drink approx. 10 ozs + daily. (buy your carrots @ Costco. 10 Lbs organic)
Anyway try that..Oh, continue to excercise..walk or go to gym & do cardio. Get your body in motion. I go 6 days a week.
I have MD (Muscular Dystrophy). Its a daily challenge. Still walking & driving @ 69 yrs of age. 70 in April. Hard to imagine. Anyway, I'm hoping that some of these tid bits will make you much healthier. Frank from La Quinta, CA

    Re: Chronic constipation, new symptoms

My diverticulosis began w/nausea, then later constipation, both intermittent; was after yrs. dx'd w/diverticulitis & sigmoid colon was removed on 7/6/16. Surgery because abscess lying in colon down in vaginal cavity had an abscess (no fever, I did have chills, severe constipation pre-surgery); wound up pre-surg. in e.r. electrolyte depletion, calcium depletion, potassium and magnesium depletion due to severe constipation - colon would not release food nutrients). Post-surgery - now w/o sigmoid colon (due to infection) and cannot poop at all without Miralax (PEG3350) which is causing heart issues i.e. palps, arrhythmia, tachycardia, etc. Please make sure through CT Scan w/Contrast that your colon is fine! I had NO idea that for years my colon was in trouble, just thought it was chronic constipation. Hope this helps.

Were you ever told you could take Miralax over the counter? I doubt the ER has the ability to diagnose what is causing your chronic constipation, they are more about treating the symptoms. Were you ever referred to a specialist? Or are you seeing a regular doctor? I would be seeing a colon and rectal specialist if I was you, it sounds like there may be a lack of peristalsis.
