Poorly Formed Stools

For over 1 1/2 years, my stools have been poorly formed. The problem seemed to begin following consumption of possibly spoiled food, although I can't be sure that there is a connection. In any case, I am 53 years old, very physically active (I run a farm in a northern climate) with no symptoms of weakness, nausea, fever, abdominal pain, etc. My evacuations are like clockwork, (after morning chores and breakfast), but they consist of a heap of short, soft, fairly narrow segments. The only other symptoms I have experienced are rectal itching, which disappeared following removing soymilk from my diet, sensativity to spicy foods in my bowels and, occasionally, moisture forming around my anus. From time to time, I evacuate in the
late afternoon. Interestingly enough, these stools can be much more well formed, almost (but not quite) "normal".

Has anyone experienced this pattern -- any ideas?

Do you know your family history Is there any Chrone's, Irritable bowel, colon cancer, etc? If not please find out then see a gastro doc. if it continues. Rule of thumb is to get a colonoscopy at age 50 or ten yrs. before a first degree relative (mother, father, sibling) is diagnosed with colon cancer.

I'm sure everything is fine as it could be a number of things but be sure to get checked out none the less. Good luck!

I agree. I was just checked out after putting it off for a long time and it's IBS. Trying to change my diet and get more fiber.

I think you need a bulk forming fiber supplement like Metamucil. Your stool should be tubular shaped and about a quarter in diameter.

All fiber is not the same -- I think you need more soluble fiber -- You seem to be getting enough Insoluble fiber for BMs -- they are just not well formed.

A person needs both soluble and insoluble fiber daily--- between 20 and 30 grams daily!!
