Re: what does a green stool mean?

I've read that green stools can be a result of consuming purple foods. I seem to always get green stools after eating purple tortilla chips at those new fresh Mex places.

Re: what does a green stool mean?

Purple poweraid and the purple mountain dew makes turned my stools green on more than one occasion. It usually takes three days to get back to normal for me.

Blueberries can do it too. If green stools are happening all the time, see your doctor. But once in awhile is no big deal.

Re: what does a green stool mean?

Hi there

I found a website that goes into the causes of different coloured stools. I note a few extracts below. As previously mentioned, if you think the problem persists then talk to your doc.

Causes of green stools
large amounts of green, leafy vegetables
green or purple artificial coloring (popsicles, Kool-Aid, gelatin)
iron supplements
rapid transit or decreased colonic transit time (when your stool passes through too quickly)

Causes of black colored stools (known as melena)
acidified blood
blood from higher in the digestive tract
iron supplements or foods high in iron
Pepto Bismol or other medicines containing bismuth
black licorice
large amounts of spinach or other greens
other foods dark in color such as chocolate sandwich cookies (Oreos)

Causes of red colored stools (known as hematochezia)
red gelatin, popsicles, or Kool-Aid
tomato juice or soup
large amounts beets

Causes of pale or clay colored stools
lack of bile salt (which gives stool a brownish color)
antacids containing aluminum hydroxide
barium from recent barium enema test
