Need help regarding symptoms. No insurance. No doctor. Please help!!

Hi. I'm brand new to this bored. I have been having horrible and emabarrassing problems for the last 2 months. The problem is I have no insurance right now (I'm a student) and I know this would most likely involved specialists and expensive tests so I just cannot go to the doc right now.

First it started with really bad constipation. Just straining to go. Hard stools. Straining so hard that I'd be in there for over an hour, sweating, getting light headed. Over the course of a few years this incident has happened occassionally--getting that constipated (when i was low-carbing) but I"d pass the hard stools and then be fine. This time tho it's just been getting worse and continuing for 2 months. I continue to strain everyday to go, even if stool is not hard. Often, the first of it will come out with no prob, but I feel more in there and I have to strain to get it out. And I'll strain really hard and then so much more will come out or sometimes I just give up and nothing mroe will come out. Sometimes it looks normal, sometimes ribbon thin. Sometimes there seems to be a lot of stuff in it, something that looks like apple skins often. (SORRY I KNOW THIS IS ALL SO GROSS but I'm desperate for answers!!) Additionally, since May I have never once left the bathroom feeling like it's all out. i constantly have that horrible full feeling!

Finally after a few weeks of this, I just took a mirror and decided to see if I can see anything. Turns out when I push, a red mass sticks out and then goes in. After searching I figured this was an internal hemmeroid. But suppositories have not helped. Recently tho I noticed, that when pushing harder, I see a bunch of those masses-like one on the left , one on the right, one in the middle. A bunch of them! Like a cluster of grapes, I guess is the best (but GROSS) visual. Is this hemmerhoids, tumors, inflamation of my intestine? I just don't know. I assume the straining is because these things are in the way! I'm afraid i wont be able to go at all eventually. And someitmes I'm very gassy. horrible gassy when gas has never really been a problem for me. and recenetly at times I feel gassy but can't pass it.

Right when this first happened, I also noticed that I could no longer eat Splenda, which i was consuming in everything for the last few years. Now as soon as I do, I have horrible, horrible gas for like 24 hours and stomach pain. So I have been staying away from it.

I should say that I low-carbed for a few years and for a year now I have been eating a lot of carbs--but fruit, veg, fiber, whole grains, etc. I eat whole wheat and fiber about every day now. Just trying to note any changes I can think of in case this is a red flag for anyone reading this.

I'm just so at a loss here. It's horrible. Sometimes I'm going 2-3 times a day when I used to go once a day. And ultimately, I just don't know if those masses are hemmerhoid or tumors or what??? I just wish they would go away. I don't know if they were there already or for a long time or just recenlty (of course b4 I never had any reason to take a mirror and look there!!). But it's since the beginning of May that this has been a problem and I just wish it would go away. Please--any information anyone can offer me would really be appreciated!

    Thank you in advance!

    kaia28,

Hi there. It is really tough to diagnose a gastrointestinal problem because there are SO many problems that it could be. It may be IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) where constipation is the main symptom. It could also be due to the fact that you are just not getting enough fiber in your diet. Try adding a soluable fiber supplement like Metamucil or Ctrucel to your diet with LOTS of water and see if that helps to ease your constipation. Stool softeners are also good to add as well. As far as the "grape-like" masses are concened - this definitely sounds like hemorrhoids. They often resemble a bunch of grapes and will shrink down a bit, but ONLY if you keep your stools soft and easy to pass with no straining. The more you strain, the worse they will become. Trust me, you do NOT want them swelling up any more than they already are. Once you have them, you are stuck with them so please, take the soluable fiber supplement, stool softeners, lots of water and extra fiber in your diet (fruits and veggies) to keep this from happening.

    Good luck

Thank you so much for both of your responses! In a way I'm very relieved, because I started to think things like colon cancer! So I'm relieved you both think it's hemmerhoids but I guess that's still bad. So okay--I need more fiber, try to keep stools soft, no straining. I did read online that it's a viscous cycle--straining causing hemmerhoids but hemmerhoids causing more straining.

So my question: will they ever go away or go down??? You said I'm stuck with them. Am I stuck wiht them as bad as they are?? B/c right now even when stool is soft, it's still a strain to fully evacuate it all b/c those masses are in the way. WARNING: About to be descriptive and gross: When I squat with a mirror and strain, I can see the grape-like masses completely in the way. The stool has no way to come out except to the left of them. I suppose when my stool is big enough, it somehow pushes the masses out of the way, but it's the smaller stools that remain that I try to push out. Should I not strain anymore no matter what?

Am I forever stuck with this problem now? Will going to the bathroom be like this forever?? Are there any pills, medicines, herbal meds, etc that I can take to make the masses shrink?? Again, Prep H suppositories have not helped.

Thank you so much for your responses. This post was the first time I vocalized this problem to anyone. It's just so embarrassing and gross. My BF knows I'm having "stomach issues" lately but that's as descriptive as I'll get.

    Again, a million thank yous!!!

P.S. why this cause me to know be so gassy when I've never been a gassy person??

Gas can be caused by alot reasons??? From food to swallowing air.

Hemorrhoids are veins that have lost their elasticity --- sorta like varicose veins and once you get them -- they don't go away.
The type you have usually require surgery.
Then you can treat your rectum so they they don't return..

Surgery?? Are you serious!? OMG-this is really bad!! Is this normal for someone who's only in her 20s??? How did this happen to me?? What happens if I can't have surgery for a while--say probably 2 years?

hi, i am having problems with my bowels too. I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE FIBER POWDER AND COLON GUARD PILLS BY GNC. I HAENT SEEN ANY DIFFERENCE IN MY BOWELS BESIDES I SOMETIMES SEE A CLEAR MUCUS TYPE OF SUBSTANCE WHEN I URINATE. THE POWDER REQUIRES ME TO TAKE ONE TEASPOON WITH 8 OUNCES OF LIQUID 3 TIMES A DAY. WHILE THE PILLS SAY TO TAKE 2 PILLS 3 TIMES A DAY. I DNT KNOW WHY NONE OF THIS ISNT WORKING. IM SCARED THAT IF I CONTINUE TAKING THESE THAT IT COULD EFFECT ME IN A BAD WAY. THE POWDER IS 2GRAMS PER SERVING AND IM NOT SURE HOW MANY IN THE PILLS. MAYBE IM NOT CONSUMING ENOUGH FIBER.
    HELP! CONFUSED?

Re: Need help regarding symptoms. No insurance. No doctor. Please help!!

The first thing is to get out what's in there WITHOUT any straining whatsoever. NEVER sit on the toilet for that length of time!!! The position itself puts pressure on the rectum & will cause hemorrhoids even without straining. If you sit, but have not "gone" within about 3 minutes, get back up & wait 'til you feel like you have to go again, then sit & try again.

I would use "Mag O7" from Aerobic life. It is an oxy-type cleanser - magnesium & citric acid. Your stools will be very loose & it will clean you out, but it is NOT a laxative.

You can purchase it at Health Food stores. [90 count bottle about $22.00] Do NOT take more than 6 per day. I do not know your "schedule" but if you can arrange to stay home for a weekend you can start with 4 capsules on an empty stomach, just before bed on Friday night. Take 2 one hour after eating brk, lunch, supper on Sat. Then 6 on Sun. night [before bed] You will have bowel movements several times during the weekend & probably go a couple of times Monday morning. When you take then all at once in the evening you're pretty much done for the BM's after the morning ones, so if you're working/school you can still go.

Eat plenty of fresh fruit - apples, melons [great because of high water content], pears, peaches, grapes [not juices] also salads & lightly cooked vegetables. Whole grain breads, crackers. Keep dairy [milk, cheese, etc] OUT of your diet & limit meats as much as you can! I would cut them out totally for at least a week...but cut way back , "fer sure" Natural "green drinks" [like Kyo Green] will give you plenty of nutrition & help heal your whole intestinal system.

You can buy "Activated charcoal tablets" for the gas [$3.50] but if you use the Mag O7, I don't see that you will need them. You're gassy because "everything" is putrifying inside & not being released.

Do not use additional fiber to begin with [IF you're eating the above you will be getting enough to do the job]. You can buy some pure aloe vera & take 3 ounces 2X a day. This will help with inflammation in your bowel from all the stoppage.

The 8 oz or so of water you take with your fiber is NOT enough. Even without adding fiber you should be drinking at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily - particularly if you have any kind of bowel problems. So if you weigh 120 lbs. that would mean at least 60 oz. water daily. For every caffeine or alcoholic drink you have [beer, liquor, coffee, colas, tea, etc] add another 8 oz. of water. They dehydrate you and there is not enough water in your body for the bowel to pull out & soften your stool. SOOOO many people end up with constipation by adding fiber supplements & not getting enough water. If you do the "Mag O7" you MUST DRINK THE WATER
It pulls water from your body into bowels to flush feces & toxins.

Even though the watery stool is NOT chemically like diarrhea [it doesn't "burn" as you expel it] you may get sore because of the hemorrhoids. So that you're prepared for the morning bowel movement, "coat" your inner & outer rectum with vaseline BEFORE you go to bed...you won't have time :when you have to go"

If you are still at school there must be some type of clinic on campus...why haven't you gone? Even if you're not at school now, there has got to be a free clinic [or payment graduated one] in your area.

Once you stop the straining the "rhoids" may start shrinking back, but if they are as bad as you describe, you should have them checked. Prescription medicine may help since you are so young & they are "new"...the natural elasticity is still strong...but, better safe than sorry!

    Good luck!

Re: Need help regarding symptoms. No insurance. No doctor. Please help!!

Thank you so much for your informative post. I have actually been away on vacation. I was determined not to let this ruin my trip. I was on a cruise. You can imagine! For the most part, I ignored it, tried not to strain, obsess about it but there were a few occasions where the fact that it was an issue at all really frustrated me! I ended up hearing about a product called Hem-Relief which I ordered and just received. I wonder if anyone has heard anything about it? The first day, after the second dose, I had a solid BM whose size was inhuman. I felt much better and thought wow this stuff must really work. I thought maybe it shrunk the HRs allowing me to pass this BM. However, in the last 2 days I have been having green diarrhea and a slightly queezy stomach. Not sure if I should stop this stuff or give it more time. The ingredients are witch hazel leaf, horse chestnut, and ginger root.

I would stick to fiber supplements and lots of water and a good diet rather than trying all sorts of products that may be good or may be horrible and waste your money in addtion to possibly making you worse. The best advice you could receive is do whatever you can to get yourself some health insurance. Your health is the most important thing in your life, and to not be able to attend to a very real problem because you don't have insurance is an awful spot to be in. Good luck figuring out what you need to do, but I think you really need to see a doctor to rule out anything serious.

I am sorry you are having problems Kaia28 and I understand your situation being without insurance. But if you can afford to take a vacation cruise and spend money on expensive products like Hem-Relief, then you should be able to save up enough money to see a doctor to be properly diagnosed and treated. After reading your posts, I sense that your fear of the unknown diagnoses may be preventing you from seeing a doctor more so than not having insurance. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away and in fact, could make your problems get worse if you continue to delay treatment. Surgery may or may not be necessary and is usually done as last resort if all other treatment options have failed. Doctors see patients every day who don't have insurance and I'm sure you can work out some arrangements with them regarding payment. Your health is the most important thing in your life because without it, nothing else matters. Please make an appointment with a GI doctor or a proctologist and get a diagnoses. Don't let fear of the unknown and lack of insurance stand in your way to better health. Sooner or later, you will have to face your situation and deal with it, insurance or no insurance. Don't wait until your condition becomes a critical emergency situation before seeking treatment. Good Luck...!
