    Help with Excessive gas

    Hi,

It's my first time posting here. I wonder if anyone can give me some help. For the last 2 months or so I have had unbelievable gas. I haven't changed my eating habits at all. I went to the doctor because the problem was becoming increasingly embarrassing. He did a stool sample test to see if I had any parasites or infection and he said they all came out negative. So he then said he thinks it's IBS. I followed his suggestion and cut out all dairy, carbonated beverages and green leafy vegetables, but that did nothing.

The gas structure varies but it's mostly just like a constant leak out my butt. I find that earlier in the day it's regular noisy gas and then as the day wears on (usually sometime after lunch) it just seems to leak out all day.

I have also found that I am burping a little more than I ever used to, but the gas is generally escaping through the rectum.

I am fairly regular when it comes to bowel movements, but lately they've been very thin and when I go, I don't feel like I've emptied out fully. I have a lot of bloating and feel like I constantly have to go. Also - my stomach makes all kinds of noises and there are noises coming from the back too. Like from the tip of my butt.

I think that's it for symptoms.

    Thanks for the help.

    Re: Help with Excessive gas

I had an interesting situation with this...

About a year ago, I developed some GI problems. First there was a fissure (very painful) which had to be corrected through a minor outpatient surgery. The I developed AWFUL gas from HELL! I mean I was getting sick after eating just because of the gas. It was like I had permanent indigestion. I also had some diarrhea here and there, and even some naseau.

I thought I had IBS at the very least, and maybe even IBD. So I decided to have a colonoscopy. I didn't eat for 48 hours before the exam, and took the phospha-soda to clean my system out totally.

I then had the exam, and fortunately nothing serious showed up, just a couple internal hemmroids.

But interestingly enough, my GI problems virtually vanished. No more excessive gas (except when I take lots of Metamucil), no more indigestion or diarrhea. There was a HUGE improvement.

Whatever was in there, was apparently "cleaned out" when I did the prep for the exam. I noticed that I even felt better right before the test. There may have been some bacteria or fungus in the small or large intestine which was causing problems. I'm back to eating whatever I want, drinking coffee, etc.

So if all else fails, try a typical colonoscopy prep. clean everything out and see how it goes. It was like a miracle for me.

The feeling of incomplete evacuation is probably caused by 2 things, 1) internal hemmroids, and 2) stress. When you are totally stressed out over your bowel movements, you don't have good movements. Thin stool is most likely due to a lack of INSOLUBLE fiber in the diet. Soluble fiber (potatoes, beer, etc.) doesn't "bulk up" the stool. Try eating more foods that provide insoluble fiber.

It doesn't sound like anything is seriously wrong with you. My symptoms were worse, and everything turned out fine.

    Re: Help with Excessive gas

chiggins1066...thanks for your reply and help. You mention the clean out you had to do for your colonoscopy (phospha-soda), is that something the doctor gives you or is that an over the counter thing?

I was desperate enough to try a colon cleansing thing (*********) and I thought at first it was working but I went back to the same gas situation.

My doctor did say that stress was a major factor in my problem but I also think it's medical in some way. I honestly think my diet could be contributing to the problem, but I haven't changed the way I eat or drink At All. I'm Irish...so I eat lots of potatoes and drink my share of alcohol. I'm pretty well stable in weight (45 years old, 5'4" 125 pounds) and that hasn't changed in 20 years. I'm afraid to introduce too much good fiber quickly because I *think* it will cause more gas. Any suggestions on what to try? (oh...and btw...the stress is also about NOT completely evacuating because I think I might pass gas if I'm not totally empty). Lately I'm obsessed with making sure I poop and I freak out if I don't think I'm "empty"

I did have success with acidophilus when I went through some serious sinus issues so I'm thinking I should try it again and see if it straightens me out. I was on antibiotics for months at a time and had awful stomach issues. My sinus doctor suggested I try the acidophilus to get my stomach back in check, and I did, and it worked.

I'm hoping it's that simple. But I'm also scared it's something serious.

Try some Gas X or phazyme or a generic equivalent anti-gas medication. My doctor reccomended Phazyme for me, and it has helped a lot. I take it before each meal. I have a lot less bloating, cramping, and gas when I take it. I have been having gas, cramping, and diarrhea since Memorial week-end. I had stool cultures, CT scan, and now am waiting for the specialist to schedule a colonscopy. The specialist told me to keep taking the Phazyme and also prescribed bentyl. I still have diarrhea, but have only been on the bentyl for 3 days now. I hope you feel better!

Fleet's Phospha Soda is over the counter. Basically, you buy a bottle, and drink the entire thing in 3 segments over the course of 24 hours.

I tried the OTC anti-gas stuff, and it didn't do a thing.

Diet and Stress play a huge role and so does diet. Try cutting down on the veggies and insoluble fiber, just for 2 weeks or so, and see what happens. I am very sensitive to fiber supplements, beans, etc. I get super gassy from that stuff, and it goes on for hours and hours afterwards.

Acidophilus is always good to take.

The main thing for you is, try not to worry and relax. from what I see, there is nothing major wrong with you, and this is typical stuff. Now if you were having bloody diarrhea, THEN it would be time to get concerned!

    Re: Help with Excessive gas

Most GAS is caused by swallowing air.
Esophagas has 2 very unique valves that close everytime we swallow.
Lacking several minerals in your diet like calcium and magnesium and Vit D can cause your muscles like valves not to function properly allowing you to swallow excess air -- that is not belched up and end up passing downward--
