Question Stool Softeners suggestions

I had surgery on 9/9 for external and internal hemmoroids. I have only had two Bowel movements. One on Tuesday and one today. I take metamucil 2 times a day and am eating a high fiber diet, but for me, going once every 4-5 days is not normal ( for me ) I read on here about taking some additional laxitives and or stool softeners. Any recommendations? I am sending hubby out to get some since I still am not able to sit and drive.

Thank you so much in advance. )

Ouch! Are you taking any pain medication? That will sometimes cause a little constipation (it slows your system down). Also, if you had anesthesia, your body will need some time to get back on track. You can take Milk of Magnesia, but if I were you, I'd stay away from laxatives...you are already going through enough. The Metamucil is a great way to get back on track. Also, drink tons of water. Best of luck in your recovery!

Yes I am taking a pain medicine that is liky Hydorocodine or somthing every 4 hrs. Now that you mention it, the nurse did say the meds will cause constipation.

Do you know if there is such a thing as "too much" metamucil? I am taking the normal "serving" 2 times a day

Re: Stool Softeners suggestions

Metamucil is a soluble fiber and works for contsipation as well as diarrhea --- not only is it a bowel regulator but it is a bulking agent --- ALL PAIN MEDS CONSTIPATE-- some more than others-- the one you are taking is not one like Tylenol!!!

A Stool softener is a good Idea!!!

Re: Stool Softeners suggestions

Taking too much Metamucil will not cause constipation but it can cause constipation if don't drink enough water with each dose.

Re: Stool Softeners suggestions

No, it won't cause constipation...but if you don't drink enough water, it won't work. My Metamucil bottle says you can take 5 capsules up to 3 times per day for irregularity. The pharmacist always recommends to take fiber when taking hydrocodone (I take it for migraines). Is the constipation making you uncomfortable physically, or does it just worry you? If you are uncomfortable physically (hurts to pass BM), I would take the laxative. When you are healed and stop taking the pain med, you should go back to normal.

Re: Stool Softeners suggestions

Thank you all. I take the powder kind.

The constipation is just worrying me, not actually hurting me. I will just up my liquid intake to help. Thanks again!
