Question Too Much Too Soon?

Tried a healthy 'new page' in my life....more water & fiber. Used some Benefiber and had a Metamucil cracker and now have gas like never before after 2 1/2 days. Is this normal after starting to increase your fiber intake?

Thanks in advance to all.

Dave

Re: Too Much Too Soon?

Most definitely. You need to start out slowly with fiber with a small dose and uping the dose every few days or even longer.

Re: Too Much Too Soon?

The natrual fiber is brokendown by digestion and ferments resulting in gas --- it goes away with continued use-- but agreed-- you have to start off slowly!!

Re: Too Much Too Soon?

Thanks Harry & Firewoman. Quit altogether until this gas subsides. Will then do it correctly. Thanks again.

Question Re: Too Much Too Soon?

Harry and/or Firewoman: Break it to me gently....how long can I expect to have this excessive gas from the fiber supplements (I quit Sunday with the Benefiber)! Thanks.

PS: Think I'll just stick to water and apples!

Re: Too Much Too Soon?

Hi there grehound27,

According to my GI, the gas will subside as soon as you are able to "expel" all of the fiber you injested. The fiber that is currently in your digestive tract is frementing, causing the gas. As soon as it's "gone" so to speak, you should not have anymore gas. Some people, like myself, can't handle psyllium or benefiber, no matter how slowly I take it. I had to use Citrucel as it causes less gas. If you find that even proceeding slowly you still experience problems, you might want to think about possible taking Citrucel instead.

Hope you get rid of that gas soon. I know how uncomfortable it can be.
