lactulose

Has anyone taken lactulose, and is it effective for severe constipation/impaction? How long does it take to start having an effect?

Re: lactulose

Funny you should ask. I don't take it, but I have to give it to my 16 yr old cat! He has suffered with constipation and impactions for about 3 yrs now and lactulose is the only thing that helps him. I give him 3 cc's right before he eats. If the impaction is too bad, I have to take him to the vet because the lactulose won't help.
His comes in a big bottle and is in syrup form. I don't know if they give it in some other form for humans though.
It works pretty quick I guess - A couple of hours after he eats. I know I have to be careful with it, because if he gets too much he gets the runs!

Re: lactulose

I took lactulose before my op for 16 years. It takes about 2 days to work as it is an osmotic laxative - it draws water from the bowel into the stool to make the stool soft and easy to pass. The good thing about it is that you can tailor it to your needs - my GP told me to take up to 80 mls a days, but the normal dose is 10 to 20 mls a day!

It also can give give you abdominal cramps and a lot of wind !

Re: lactulose

Thanks for your input! Yep, I have the big bottle with syrup, same as the veterinary form I guess. I am starting with 30mL/day but was told I could increase it if necessary.

Caleyangel, I saw in your other post that you had been diagnosed with idopathic slow-transit constipation. Is that something you always had, or did it pop up out of the blue?

Re: lactulose

Hi sorrel before you take anything you should find out what caused you to get this.. You should get to the source.

I have always had constipation (since I was born), but I was only diagnosed in April this year - just took 28 years!! Doctors all my life had been telling me to eat more fibre, ended up going to a dietician who told me my diet was fine. Kept annoying me GP who eventually, after trying every laxative and combination, referred me to my local hospital. When they ran out of ideas they referred me onto the specialist centre for colorectal surgery where I was diagnosed! And now I am 4 and half weeks post total colectomy and feel great!

Re: lactulose

Losec, I totally agree! I have been to a few doctors and no one can figure it out yet. I have other symptoms too and my GP thinks it is all connected, but no one knows the cause yet. In the meantime he prescribed the lactulose, because right now I feel so full (presumably due to the constipation??) that I can't eat. At least I feel like I am doing SOMETHING instead of sitting around waiting for everything to get worse.

Re: lactulose

Caleyangel, that is so great that your surgery was successful! It must have been nerve-wracking to decide whether or not to have it.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause a SUDDEN onset of severe constipation? BTW, the lactulose is not working yet. It seems like nothing ever works.

Re: lactulose

It was a scary prospect but it was either surgery or having to take a day off my work every 2 weeks to overdose on laxatives that didnt really work that well! My boss was getting a bit annoyed with my sick days and so was I!
