Headaches due to constipation

Does anyone get headaches associated with constipation?

It has always been this way with me. I get constipated then I get a headache and the longer I go without BM, the worse the headache is (turns into a migrane-like with nosea). At that point I have to take laxative, and as soon as it starts working, the headache goes away. Tylonol does nothing for this type of headache for me.

I try to do all the right things to prevent consitpation - taking fiber, drinking water, exersising, eating right. Sometimes I just can't help and eat some junkfood or forget to take fiber, then I am almost certain to get constipated to a point that only laxatavie (I take exlax) would work.

Any one else has a similar situation with headaches? Have you had any medical advise for that? What causes it? Anything to shed some light... thanks.

Re: Headaches due to constipation

Yep, killer headaches when I'm constipated. No over-the-counter pain relievers seem to help, either. Same as you, as soon as I'm back on track and things are moving again, the headache quickly disappears.

When this first happened to me, I spoke to my family doc and my GI specialist, and they both looked at me as if I'd pulled my head off and sat it on the table. They both told me there's no correlation, but I find lots of info about the correlation between the two issues on the Net. I mean, I do trust two good, different docs -- one being a specialist, too -- more than the Internet, but you're the second person I've come across who has the headaches, too. One would think docs would at least be aware of this.

Anyway, no, you're not alone As long as I eat right, plenty of fiber, lots of water, daily walks, and keep the constipation at bay, I don't get the headaches, either.

Good luck!

Re: Headaches due to constipation

Try taking some Magnesium Aspartate. Start with 400mg and work up to 1200mg. Bowel tolerance will tell you when you're taking enough as too much will cause loose stools. Also try adding oatmeal, rice and/or prunes to your diet.

A great natural product to regulate bowels, produce a ssofter stool and clean your colon is Super GI Cleanse by Uni Key Health Systems. You take 3 with a glass of water before breakfast and again at night before bedtime, if needed.

I am glad I am not alone in this Apparently this is a rear condition! I did ask my family doc about it a couple of years ago, and she never heard of the correlation, but suggested to do the right things to prevent constipation.

Re: Headaches due to constipation

Headaches are common in people who have constipation.

Very often it can be a build up to toxicity in the body trying to get out with nowhere to go!

After a colonic for example you would think people wouldn't have a headache as they have just had an enormous bowel movement! However because the colonic has released lots of toxins in the bowel that haven't been able to get out during the colonic they float around the body in the system trying to get out elsewhere - ie sweat. So people who have colonics do get headaches sometimes after a treatment.

The way to stop the headaches - make sure you are getting a regular natural bowel movement - no laxatives. Water, fibre and fresh vegetables all help!

The connection doesn't surprise me one bit. Apparently the colon is second only to the brain in the number of nerve receptors for seratonin and such, so I can see where an upset here would cause the brain stress as well!
