    Positive hemoccult

    Hi everyone.
I just got back from my doctors office.for what was a routine exam..I had a positive hemoccult..It was a surprise to me, as I have never had any bleeding of any kind before.I have absolutely no symptoms at all..no cramping, no soreness,no diareaah,no constipation, nothing.

He made me an appointment with a surgeon for next month...so, I guess my question is..what happens next...?
I go for routine bloodwork before the surgeon. will anything show up in the bloodwork, if it's cancer?
I am assuming they will do another hemoccult, then a colonoscopy?
anyone with any information will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks..sallyd

    SallyD.

I would think you should see a Gastro Doctor before a Surgeon unless your doctor found something and he is not tell you??

Also, the Surgeon should be a Colorectal type since that is the area that they specialize in!!

    I wish you well---Harry

yes, his card says..."board certified general surgery, and Gastrointestinal endoscopy" so that's cool, right?

I'm getting nervous, because the doctor kept feeling my abdomen, and asking me if it hurt.

But if he was that concerned, He made my appointment with the specialist for 6 weeks from now! I don't think I will make it that long...every twinge I get, no matter what, I am thinking OMG..it's cancer!

    Thanks..sally D

    Re: Positive hemoccult

    Hi,
Did you do three cards over three days time that all came back positive, or was your positive only on one card? I would definitely repeat the test, and try not to worry, because a positive can be caused by anything from a GI bleed, eating a lot of red meat, eating certain vegetables, constipation (even though you don't think you have it)...
    Good luck to you!

    Re: Positive hemoccult

    Sally,
The most common cause of blood is hemorrhoids and they don't have to hurt to give a positive reading.

Also, there are some foods that give a positive result -- like some meats and beets. or any food that is red.

Don't worry until you ge a diagnosis.

    Harry
