Magnesium citrate

So.. I want to cleanse my colon, and am thinking of trying Magnesuim Citrate. MY question is how long will the effects last? If I drink it tonight, how soon will I be able to leave the house without trouble? Does it generally work over night? I'm not nor have I ever been constipated, so I'm sure it will get things moving quickly. I've taken it before, but can't recall how quickly and long lasting the effects were.

Re: Magnesium citrate

Having recently experience taking Magnesium Citrate for prep before surgery, I'd say give it a good six hours before venturing out. You could always wear a Depends if you really have to go out and things are still dicey. Why would you even want to take it if you aren't constipated?? Drink some prune juice and it's ever so much more pleasant without the ensuing "fireworks".

Re: Magnesium citrate

Thanks clover. I drank 1/2 a bottle and waited all night, but nothing... than left to do some shopping the next day and had to run 4 times. Its been loose ever since. I quit taking my asacol for the last couple days so thats likely the reason for the loose bm now. Just thought it'd clear things out. My bms haven't been loose nor was I constipated before this, but my bottom has been sore and irritated. I wonder if the temp colostomy had an effect on the bottom, or if the diverticulitis is back. No one mentioned Chron's when I had surgery either, but that causes the sore bottom too. I'm not looking for trouble, but want to be sure I'm doing everything possible to stay healthy. I had no idea I had the diverticulits until was severe. Thought it was just "nervous stomach" or lactose intolerance. Can't get into the gastroenetrologist until Feb!. Hope it doesn't get worse before then...
