Insomnia and itching after colon resection.

My bowel resection surgery was nine days ago. They removed 18 inches of my right colon and my appendix. I was on the epidural block for the first three days, along with a Fentanyl pump. My bowels were not waking up at all, and an x-ray revealed an ileus. The pump was taken out on the third day, replaced by morphine every two hours. I was on that schedule for another two and a half days. I can honestly say that until my bowels finally woke up on the morning of the sixth day that it was the most miserable days of my life. Since that morning of the last morphine shot, I have been completely unable to sleep. At all. I have slept literally less than two hours each evening. The minute I lie down, I feel extremely agitated and edgy, with every inch of my body itching. Even my ears itch. I honestly look like a heroin addict coming off years of heroin use. Tonight I took three Benadryl and I am climbing the walls worse than ever. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Oh yeah.... I forgot that I also wanted to ask the other resecties out there -- at what point do you start taking Metamucil again? So far, I am eating only very bland stuff with no fiber. But BM's are starting to firm up and I am afraid of not getting enough fiber....?

Re: Insomnia and itching after colon resection.

If you haven't called your surgeon, please do so--that is what they are there for--even if it is a weekend call. I had to call mine on a Sunday night about 2 weeks after my surgery. It was nice because she reassured me and had her nurse already informed of what tests I needed when I called in the next morning.

I have had insomina after both my resection and hysterectomy. However, the only time that I had insomina and itching was because of a drug reaction. Are there some meds that you are on that maybe causing the itching?

Call and see what is going on. Also let your surgeon direct your use of Metamucil. They seem to have different ideas of when to start it.
