Anal fistula

I think I have one of these dear things.

1. What doctor? Went straight to making an appointment with a colon & rectal surgeon, but wondering if I should see a gastroenterologist first.

2. Did anyone have anything else associated with this? E.g., did you have IBS or Crohn's disease associated with this. I have not been diagnosed with anything yet.

3. I've had a discharge but the gyn cleared me, and I didn't think to ask what else it could have been. Done some deductive reasoning on my own.

4. What procedure did you have done? Experience? Success rate? Hoping someone here can share something.

5. Lately I've been having a lot of pain on the right side of my abdomen. It's almost like a stricture, feels like a blocking. This is waking me up in the middle of the night. I also have a lot of gurgling, gas.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Anal fistula

Where is the fistula located? I have a recto-vaginal fistula it is pretty small, too small for surgery, I am going to start Remicade infusions in a few weeks (pending my insurance covers it). I had to go from one doctor (Gyno, Gastro and PCP) to another before I gave up and went to a specialist I found on line at the Univeristy of Michigan, if you haven't already done it I would say Gastro first . I have crohn's disease, for the last year I had been dealing with abcesses and a fissure, they have cleared up but the fistula never completly healed. Good luck, I hope you can find some answers.

Re: Anal fistula

I had an anal fistula surgery three weeks ago. It is still healing and caused my hemorrhoids to flare up a lot worse than they were before surgery. It was supposed to be a three week recovery but I am still battling my hemmorhoid flareup. At a two week followup by my surgeon, he said I was 80 percent healed. I am hoping to get my hemorrhoids back under control but it seems like a slow process. I am following all the recommendations, fiber, not straining, getting off the pot immediately but still having problems. The anal fistula was more of a bother than serious issue and am now wondering whether I did the right thing in getting the surgery. Anyone else with these issues?

Re: Anal fistula

GAPilot: You don't say what surg. you had. Did they simply clean the fistula tract, put in a Seton drain, do a Flap procedure???? To where does the anal fistula tract go, out buttock or somewhere else???? These fistulas can be tricky and re-occur unless good surg. is done. Would you please tell us what was done?
