    CJD hypochondriac???

Months ago I took an anatomy class and had an “exposure”. We were viewing cadavers in class that day and wet specimens including brain tissue. A used glove (touched the cadaver and specimens) was inside out and I went to put it on. My hands have eczema and I got scared that I could contract CJD from the used glove. I washed my hands after and told my professor. She said I should be fine since the cadavers are screened and are from the UCSF Willed Body Program. Then I told here I was more concerned about the specimens and she told me that we’re also from the willed body program, we’re properly embalmed and don’t contain infectious materials. They were acquired more than 30 years ago. This is what concerns me. I don’t think they had screening for prions back then. I am so afraid and almost certain I have CJD. Someone please reassure me.

That would be impossible for you to get CJD under those conditions.

Totally impossible to contract CJD that way.

But couldn’t it get into my body through broken skin?

    CJD & Cadaver

I’m reposting this because I wasn’t clear the first time.

It seems like a scary event, but you don't get it from broken skin.

    Re: CJD & Cadaver

anxiousmarie, there is no known transmission of CJD from any dry material, which is the situation you described. So, that you touched the specimen doesn't matter at all.

However, anxiety can be a killer. Learn to make yourself relax and don't create problems in your mind. Get some counseling and learn ways to relax your mind and body. I am telling you this out of personal experience with my own anxiety. We can take control of our own thought lives.
