Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. For some time now its hard to say exactly maybe a year maybe longer, i've had this feeling of pressure within my head. I guess the best way to describe it in layman's terms would be that it feels like my brain is swolen up and pressing against my skull mostly in the front of my head. Thought it could be sinus, but the ENT said it was OK. Had a CT scan last year (without contrast) and they said it was OK. Now recently, i've began experiencing periods of dizziness and faintness especially when the pressure in my head is higher. This often goes along with or is preceeded by a long duration headache. It comes and goes, some days are better than others, often times I am fine for a week and then it hits me again. Right now, today, is a very bad day. I feel faint, dizzy, and like I just need to lay down and sleep, even though I slept for 15 hours last night because I had a headache.

Please help me, the dizziness and faintness and pressure inside my head is very scary, and the doctors don't seem to have an answer. Sometimes I just feel like I'm going to faint and die right there. I am not a hypochrondriac and am otherwise healthy as far as i know. At least can anyone relate to me if you don't have an answer? I am not even 30 years old yet and I am worried about sickness so early in my life..

thank you.

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...

I'm 25 and have had all of the symptoms you describe.
It was really bad in my first year at uni, turned out it was caused by stress, anxiety and a bit of depression.
Does the headache lessen after a few drinks?
Is it always ok when you first wake up?

I didn't believe the doctors, I do more now. It seems weird that some kind of sub-conscious stress can make you dizzy. I've had all sorts of blood tests, all fine so I guess they must be right. Might be a good idea to keep a diary of what you do/ eat so you can see if there are any coincidences.
It may even be an allergy.
Please stay hopeful, I thought I would never be normal again but am strangely better now I'm staying with relatives. It may be something fairly simple. Hope you get to the bottom of it anyhow... :)

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
can it really be all psychological? just doesn't seem possible. especially since sometimes the dizziness and pressure gets far worse if i lay down on my side (but then i just close me eyes and imagine its not there and fall asleep). So depressing, so disheartening, I've got a life to live

Oh, and yes, usually it seems better when i first wake up. The dizziness that is. But when I wake up is when I have the worst of my headaches.

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
Well all I can say is that I went to the doctors hundreds of times, I was sure it was the symptoms causing the anxiety, not the other way around. But it is three years later and I am still here. When I started my new job recently I had a headache and felt dizzy, confused and tired for a week. I went crying to the doctor, sure I had a brain tumor. He did blood tests, looked in my ears, mouth and checked my stomach. He was sure it was 'all in my head'. Caused by stress and anxiety.

I do have social phobia and health anxiety though so I'm sure that added to it. I had to start a new job and meet loads of people which is quite stressful for me but I thought I was coping ok, no reason to be dizzy.

The reason I asked was because I used to feel 'ok' for the first half hour/ hour upon waking. Then it would set in and I'd feel dizzy and lethargic with pains in my head. I was still worried it was something serious. But it's passed now. I also used to feel light-headed a lot.

Do you feel like you're in a 'brain-fog' sometimes, that you can't quite take everything in?

The important thing is, DON'T ASSUME IT IS ANXIETY. Make sure you see a different doctor to get a different opinion and get all of the tests done that you can. It's good to be on the safe side. Just don't rule out anxiety.

Also I've read a lot about allergys. Your headaches and tiredness may be a simple allergy to wheat/ lactose (in milk)/ fruit/ anything so you should look into getting an allergy test done. You should be able to find info in books or on the net on how to eliminate foods from your diet for a while.

There was a post I was reading on these boards about M(c)G(s)? in food. Some chemical in processed food is making some people have pressure in their head a bit like you describe. I think it's under 'headaches' or 'inner ear disorders'. So I would check that out as well. Good luck.. :)

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...

I have all your symptoms and some..... I seem to be a medical mystery! I have pressure behind the eyes, strange feeling forehead, pressure in neck along with neck and top of back pain.

The dizziness and pressure when it is really bad stops me from holding a conversation with someone. It may sound crazy, but I just get a kind of blood rush or something and then feel the need to escape from that situation (its not like full blown panic attacks or anything.

Mine started as a dizziness when leaning over, then came the tinnitus, chronic insomnia, tmj, back pain, IBS, anxiety depression and the list goes on.

Some things that may help
A) Stop drinking any products with Caffine (Coffee) etc.
B) Don't drink fizzy drinks (Pop etc)
C) Get plenty of excercise (walks, swimming) where possible
D) Try Ginko Biloba (this helps with blood flow to the brain and extremities)
E) Try meditation or relaxation at least 15 minutes per day. Focus on your breathing. Don't try to empty your mind of your thoughts, simply focus on your breath and ths will come in time.

A good test to have done is the 24 hour Saliva Cortisol test (most good lab's do this test). They take 4 samples over a day (you spit into a tube) and this measures how much Cortisol is in your saliva. If you are low then this could suggest further problems causing your stress, headaches, dizziness etc. I am currently being investigated as I have Adrenal Insufficiency.

Good luck,

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
Thank you all for your replies. I have re-written my story to be more detailed, This is what I plan on giving to my doctor so I won't forget this is just a little more info (by the way, the brain tumor thing worries the heck out of me):

Beginning about a year or so ago, I began having this pressure in my head, mostly behind my forehead, eyes, nose, and temples. I used to think it was sinus, but the ENT says no problems. The pressure in my head could best be described as a "full" feeling, almost as if my head were filled with water about it was about to burst.

I had my first dizzy spell about 7 months ago where I began seeing flashes of light in the corner of my eyes and felt as if I was going to faint and ended up going to the Emergency Room where they ran a CT scan that came back no problems. Just recently about a month ago, I began having more frequent headaches. And I have begun having more frequent and pronounced dizzy spells. Before a month or 2 ago, I had occasional dizzy spells mostly when I tilted my head or was lying down, but they usually went away. But more recently, the dizziness seems to go along with the amount of pressure I am feeling in my head. During a typical episode, I will wake up with a splitting headache which lasts most of the day, or even up to 2 days, and usually the dizzy spells begin when the headache starts to go away.

It is not exactly like the room is spinning, but more like it is just bouncing around violently, up and down, back and forth. Very often, if I lay down on my side or back, the pressure in my head goes way up, and the dizziness is dramatically higher, and when I close my eyes the dizziness no longer bothers me but if I open my eyes the world is still bouncing around.

Normally, I feel the best when I first wake up, unless I wake up with a headache, which is not uncommon. The dizziness and pressure usually seem to get worse as the day goes on. Sometimes I have to stop what I'm doing and just sit down and close my eyes.

This is affecting my life and I'm wondering if there is any clear cut answer. Some days are almost symptom-free, where as other days, I cannot bear to leave the house in fear of fainting, or getting very dizzy out in public. It has been suggested that maybe stress is a factor, however I should point out that I don't really have much stress, in fact all i do for the most part is sit around the house, exercise, and get on the internet, and the fact that my dizziness is often dramatically worse when I lay on my side, makes me question how it could be psychological and not physical...not to mention the headaches and pressure in my head.

So, to summarize: CT scan normal 7-8 months ago after first "incident". Pressure in my head has been going on constantly for at least a year. Just recently dizzy spells and pressure have got worse, especially the dizziness, and light headedness

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...

Do you feel like you're in a 'brain-fog' sometimes, that you can't quite take everything in?

And yes!!! absolutely, when dizziness hits me, i feel very much in a fog. its like everything starts blurring together and it feels like im going to lose consciousness. In a way, I feel like I'm dying. The only thing I can really do is lay down and close my eyes. Sometimes I end up just sleeping 8 hours because i know i'll feel better when i wake up. Fatigue goes along with this fog. I lose the will to try and dont care what happens to me except i just want to sleep.

edit: could it be Anemia?

I am only 29 yrs old

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
Hey, I really feel for you, I don't know if what I've experienced is the same but I know how frustrating it is, especially when you try and explain it to doctors and they look at you like you're mad.
I don't know much about anemia but a blood test should show whether or not you are. It's good to have tests done, even if just for peace of mind.

The problem is that fatigue can be caused by any number of things.
I used to think I might die in my sleep I felt that empty and weird. I was sure I had something really serious. That the doctors just didn't have a clue. I started to think that the air in my room was poisoning me n stuff. I saw this programme on tv about certain types of mould making people very sick and tired. (I think it's really rare though) and started to worry about what it might be. Please don't be a stress-head like me, it just made me worse at the end of the day.

Do you drink alcohol? I know it seems weird to drink when you're dizzy, but I used to find that if I got drunk I didn't seem to notice it. Which is why I can now believe it might have been stress-related.

If you drink alcohol, do the symptoms lessen or go away?

How did you ever get a doc to figure out your adrenals were bad?

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
I have the same problems dizziness when laying down and always feeling lightheaaded, horrible headaches that get worse at night, feeling tired but cnt sleep, my head feels like their is so much pressure on it and hurts so bad. I have never had such a bad pain in my head like this before and my doctor just wrote me off and said its all in my head. He thinks that I am fine and it is anxiety. I feel for you because it feels like thats all doctors say its like the easy way out for them.

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
this is my first time on this site... came across it by accident...
could I ever relate to the stuff people describe...
have an MRI booked myself for tomorrow... have had the same
symptoms for a few months... or longer, since a very bad
sinusitis that was not treated properly... 2 years ago...
and the sinuses have been very reactive ever since...
am seeing an ENT specialist next week... had to
actually change family physicians, as I think the one I had
for many years had me labelled as a hypochondriac...
I go for my annual checkups... and rarely at other times
throughout the year...... it is very disconcerting to have
that dizziness.... it helps me to at least know there
are other folks out there with similar stuff going on...
thanks for listening...

Re: Please, I need help. Dizziness, etc...
JB, dizziness seems to be the most prevalent symptom in the "brain" group. But it appears that it can result from very different factors. Based on my own experience I would strongly suggest you check out cervical (neck) issues that would normally show up on an MRI. If you find that your symptoms are aggravated by sudden or aggressive movement of the neck, or back, generally, there is obviously something going on with your spine that may very well be the cause of symptoms you are experiencing in your head. I can only base this on my own experience, having very similar symptoms to yours. I'd really be interested in knowing the results should you try my suggestion out.
Only, please, don't overdo it! Good luck, I hope you find some answers. Bob
