    shunt brain surgery

How did this happen to a three year old ? No genetics, no tumor, and no fever to indicate meningitis; just a happy healthy 3 year old boy until a few weeks ago. How difficult will placing a shunt and how long until he will be healthy and returning to a normal playful life?

    Re: shunt brain surgery

I have a 12 month old son who has been diagnosed with "benign extra axial fluid of infantcey with enlarged ventricles. Everything I've read says People like this have shunts placed. My sons neurosurgeon however just kinda dismisses it. Should I be worried?

    Re: shunt brain surgery

My father who is 68 years old now had a brain shunt about 10 years ago. The doctors told him at 40 that he had enlarged ventricles.Which he proable was born with. His head is a little on the large size. We were told to watch him and we did. When he started to develope shuffling and memory wasn't that good. They had to place the shunt at that time. It actually worked wonderful until about 1 month ago. He is now shuffling and having a problem with short term memory. He has a urinary track infection were hoping thats part of the problem. Because they said the shunt is working fine and that the ventricles are now larger. They say there nothing else they could do. It just happened so quickly is this common.
