painful lump and numbness from 2-3 M.O. cut

Less than three months ago, I cut myself with a steak-knife on the side of my left ring finger. It was a pretty deep cut, but I was told it was "fine and would just leave an ugly scar." Well, it began to heal and my the area of and around the cut went slightly numb, but almost that annoying recovering from numbness feeling opposed to a can't feel anything type numbness. Anyway, it scarred over and I still have that annoying numb feeling where my cut is on my finger, but I noticed a couple days ago that a painful lump developed at one end of my cut. In the past few days it has continued to grow in size as to where you can even see it when looking at my finger from the side. I've read that numbness typically happens when you cut a nerve and that lumps sometimes form during the healing process. My question is whether or not I should be as concerned as I am and what type of doctor I should see. Should I seek out a hand specialist or go to a regular doctor? I just don't want to give the lump more time to accumulate in size if the issue is truly as sever as I feel it has become... or maybe I'm just overreacting.
