Females - Urologist visit for dropping bladder and slight incontinence?!

    Hi everyone,

I was referred by my gynecologist to a urologist. My bladder has dropped quite a lot in the past year. I am 55 yr. old woman. I do have slight incontinence. Not just stress, but a little comes out, whenever it feels like it. So, I must wear small pads, for now.

This is my question(s): When I go to the urologist, what tests are done on a female? This is to see about having just a bladder sling, or for other possible problems, that could be causing the incontinence. I have had no infections, so no tests for that (I would guess.). I know that I will probably have to have a few tests that involve the use of catheters!:< I hate that. But, I guess it is what they do.

Any information from the ladies, especially, would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Wannabe

Re: Females - Urologist visit for dropping bladder and slight incontinence?!

    Hi,

I'm 25 years old and I developed mild incontinence 2 years ago (still have it daily). The two main urology tests are: urodynamics tests and cystoscopy. I've had both done. Unfortunately I'm still having problems (frequency, urgency, fatigue, incontinence and nocturia.) I'm going to see a specialist in 2 weeks.

    When is your appointment?

Personally I found the urodynamics test the worst. I nearly passed out. They have to stick a tube up your bum (I've never had anything up my bum it was scary). Then when I did the test the tube came out of my bum 4 times and the nurse had to put it back in. It definitely isn't pleasant. The worst part of it was the tests didn't help me at all. I am still sick and they still don't know what's wrong.

The cystoscopy wasn't as bad at all. For me the worst part of this test was the recovery. I developed a UTI from the test instruments (this is quite common). As well, I had to pee in a bathtub filled with warm water because it hurt A LOT to pee after that test. This was definitely the worst part of the test. I felt very wiped out afterward.

I hope you figure out what's going on. Remember the testing isn't horrible in all cases I just personally had a bad experience. I've spoken with several people who didn't have any problems with it at all. It is mild discomfort if they can figure out what's wrong with you -- in that case it's totally worth it.

    Regards,

    - Jasmine Tea-

    Hi Jasmine Tea,

Thanks for your information and help. I do not have an appointment yet, I will make it on Monday (today!). My gynocologist, just referred me on Friday.

I think that my father had those tests. But, they are probably a little different from womens tests?! I am going to ask/insist on pain and valium medications before my tests!!! I hate catheters. When I was in the hospital about 4 years ago, I had a catheter and it hurt/bothered me for about 2 mo. afterwards! I think that I fell out of bed, trying to get out (doped up). And that sort of injured me. So....

With my luck, I will probably develop everything you did! Or perhaps, the doctor and his nurse, can calm me down and make me have hope for not too much pain!!! :>

Thanks again. Hope you get better.

    Hi,

No problem. I just want to assure you that the problems I have with frequency, nocturia etc didn't develop as a result of the tests. Those problems were already there.

Anyhow I hope the tests go well and I hope we both get better soon.

    Take care.

Hi. I've had urodynamics done twice and a cystoscopy. It wasn't bad at all. The worst part for me was that it was humiliating. It was not painful at all. I did have a mild bout of urge incontinence after my second uro, but it only lasted a couple of days. I've suffered from stress incontinence for 11 years (after the birth of my first child). I am scheduled to have the TVT procedure done next week. My bladder has only dropped slightly. For me, the problem is hypermobility of the urethra. Let me know if you'd like any more info. Good luck.

    Hi Amrita,

Thanks for the answers to my questions! I really appreciate it. The more I know, the less scared and nervous I will be (I hope!). What is hypermobility of the urethra? When you had your tests done (urology), did they give your anything for pain or nerves? That is my main concern. I figure if I can have valium, I will not feel humiliated or nervous?! Thanks again.

    Take care and good luck.

Re: Females - Urologist visit for dropping bladder and slight incontinence?!

I didn't get anything for nerves or pain. I wasn't too nervous, just embarrased and there really wasn't any pain. Would you like a description of what the procedures were like for me?

Hypermobility of the urethra just means that the urethra moves too much. When I cough, sneeze, laugh, lift, etc. the pressure makes the urethra move. It opens and allows urine to leak out. My doc is going to put a "sling" under the urethra to support it. An actual bladder sling is a bigger surgery. In my procedure the surgeon goes up through the vagina and threads the sling up and out above the pubic bone. There are many different types of bladder surgery. If the bladder drops too much then they probably would have to lift the bladder itself, which is more involved. So, I guess you'll have to go through the testing to see what is actually going on with you. It's really not that bad. I've been dealing with this for so long that I guess I just got so fed up with it and the testing seems easier than all of the lifestyle changes I have had to make.

I've tried other things like kegels, biofeedback, diet modification & electrical stimulation. I guess that works for a lot of people. My gyn said I was her only "failure". Nice. Maybe something like that can help you?

Oh, there is also overactive bladder, which they have medication for. Once you figure out what you're dealing with you can check out all your options.

    Good luck!

    Hi Amrita,

Thanks for you nice detailed information. You are probably right, when you say, I need the test to really find out exactly what is wrong with me. I might have more than a prolapsed bladder (dropped, Stage II cystocele), so...

If you do not mind, and have the time, I would like to you to tell me how your procedures were carried out and if you had any problems. Did you ever feel like you had a UTI afterward? When, I had a catheter taken out after 1 week, it felt like I had a UTI for months, afterward!!! I went to the dr. and had a test and had no UTI !!!

    Thanks again.

Re: Females - Urologist visit for dropping bladder and slight incontinence?!

    Ok, here it goes:

The first time I had the urodynamics was in my GYN's office. I sat in a reclining chair (with stirrups - yuk!) and the tech placed 1 catheter in. She filled my bladder and had me cough several times. She tested to see how much my bladder could hold, how much I leaked, how strong my pelvic floor muscle was, how well my sphincter muscle works, abdominal pressure, and probably other stuff, but that's all I remember. After I emptied they also measured how much output there was. It was over, done, no problems, no pain, no UTI afterwards. The main thing was that the tech ended up being a parent of a child that my children go to school with, so it was pretty embarassing. But, she was professional and I got over it.

After that I did all the biofeedback and other things I mentioned earlier.

When nothing worked I went to a urologist, who wanted to do his own testing. I did the cystoscopy first. It was intimidating when I entered the room because it looked like an operating room.....big lights, a table in the middle, a tray with a green cloth and tools on it. I sat on the table waiting for the doc and had time to examine the tools. I saw the scope, which was a very, very long tube-like wand. I thought "They're gonna stick that up me? AHHHHHHHH". They put some iodine on me (maybe it had some numbing substance in it, I'm not sure) and placed the "wand" in. It didn't hurt at all. I was able to see the monitor and see the inside of my bladder. He looked around and then took the scope out. They gave me an antibiotic before the procedure. Then he had me cough. Leak. Embarrasing! Then he stuck a Q-tip in my urethra and had me cough again. Leak. and the Q-tip moved a lot. That's how he diagnosed hypermobility. Then he held the Q-tip taught and had me cough again. No Leak. Yippie! So, he was pretty confident that the TVT procedure that I'm having tomorrow will work. But, he wanted to do the urodynamics again to provide him with a baseline in case things don't go as planned.

After the cystoscopy I did feel a little irritated in my urethra. Kind a like a UTI, but not as bad and it only lasted a couple days.

So, then I did the uro again. His tech had me lie down on a table and used 2 catheters, which was pretty weird, but not painful. Then I had to walk over to a portable-type-hospital potty. She filled my bladder and checked all the same things as the first one and probably more. This time I had to let her fill it for a long time and tell her when it was uncomfortable, almost painful, and when I just couldn't hold it anymore. Then I emptied and was done. She was also very professional and talked to me a lot, explaining what she was doing. It was weird having a conversation while I was sitting on the potty! But she made a point to look me in the face, which was less humiliating. After this test I had urge incontinence for a couple days, which really sucked! But, it went away. I was scared that I was stuck with that for life and decided it is much worse than stress incontinence!

    I hope that helps.

Wish me luck and prayers for tomorrow!

I'll post again when I'm able and let you know the results.

    Take care,

    Amrita

    Hi,
My moms bladder dropped twice because of a hysterectomy they did surgery on her and actually sewed something like a net to hold it in place. We both have bladder issues I sneeze I pee the sun is to bright I pee or so it seems right now they treat it with meds and panty liners for leakage. The tests I had done were only ultrasounds so far but hang in there.
