My Mother and Breast Cancer

Hello. My name is, Samuel. About twelve years ago, my mother was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer, on the right side of her right breast. I believe the size was about 1.2cm. Her treatment was surgery and radiation. As of the last few weeks, she's been feeling pains and numbness in her right arm and pain on the right side of her back.

My question to you is what is the likelihood of a recurrence? As of today, she's scheduled to have a CT scan and a mammogram in August.

Re: My Mother and Breast Cancer

Hi there.

I'm no expert but I've been there. I had stage 1 with lumpectomy/lymphectomy, then radiation and been on Tamoxifen the last 4 years (actually the med is why I'm on this board at the moment).

I'm assuming your mother had just a lumpectomy?

There is always a chance it could recur, but if she has been regularly visiting the doctor, always having a mammo yearly, then hopefully that is a good "safety net".

Since she's 12 years out she may not be required to see the oncologist regularly, but she probably would be doing a mammo yearly as it is.

If she has concerns, definitely see the doctor - family, or oncologist. At least she is getting those scans done now. Also bear in mind she might have to consider other issues - gall bladder, etc.
