    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Thanks Brenda. The doctor's office called back and he's putting me back on Cipro, 500 mg 2x a day for 7 days. If I don't see improvement after 2 days I'm supposed to call him, or if I get worse I'm supposed to go to the er.

I'm not so sure that I have a uti though. I don't have any burning, just abdominal, rectal and pelvic pain, urinary frequency (I have to go all the time!), low grade fever and now the swelling/fluid in my knees.

I'm thankful that my colon/rectal surgeon is trying to take care of the problem, though, as no one else would get me in! I'm sure this isn't something they'd normally be doing.

I hope the Cipro works for you although I have to agree if the Cipro did not work the first time, the odds are not good that it will work the second time.
If you are not really better by tomorrow, and I do not mean 10-15 percent better, I a mean your symtoms are all gone, you call that doctors office first thing and demand an appointment for that day.
Please let me know how you are feeling.

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

The Cipro didn't work. I went back and saw an associate of my surgeon since he was out last week. He was suspect of an abscess but didn't find one. He said all of my symptoms were a result of a Crohn's flare-up. I don't really understand it-now I'm told that my uti wasn't really a uti and I don't have infection? I get the protein and red blood cells in my urine is from Crohn's, but aren't the white blood cells in my urine indicative of infection?

The surgeon also looked at the swelling in my knees and said it's inflammation not infection. He said I need to see a rheumatologist for treatment. Again, all due to my Crohn's-lovely disease, that Crohn's!!! He also noticed blueness in my hands, which I hadn't noticed.

I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy on Thursday, and will see my new gastroenterologist on Monday. Hopefully everything will get straightened out and I'll start feeling better!

So, it's looking like my Crohn's is the culprit and not anything more serious like ovarian cancer. Thank goodness! Cancer is a scary thing in my family-my grandmother had genetic testing done when she was diagnosed with colon cancer and we found out she carries a hereditary cancer gene. My great-grandmother died from colon cancer, my aunt died last year from a horrible ordeal with it, and my aunt's son died in his 30s from an unknown cancer-when it was found it was throughout his entire body and the type was undetermined. With my Crohn's, I know I'm at an even greater risk of developing cancer.

Thanks for all of the advice and concern! Take care everyone!

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Had my scope today and it wasn't too abnormal. A lot of inflammation and a polyp was removed and sent for biopsy.

Still having all the same symptoms, but the blood in my urine has become much worse. Yesterday, after starting my prep for the colonoscopy, every time I urinate there's a good amount of mucousy blood. I'm really concerned about it. I've had blood clots in my urine off and on lately, and had microscopic blood found on urinalysis, but since yesterday it's been each time I go and there's been more of it. Could my prep have caused this to happen? I've had 2 scopes in the past and this didn't happen, but I'm still hoping that this could just be the result of the 32 pills I had to take to prepare my colon, that somehow it could have made it worsen. It's really starting to alarm me!

I will see the gastroenterologist Monday. Hopefully he can get me in with a urologist and rheumatologist quickly so that I can get these things taken care of. In the meantime, I have a prescription to help get the inflammation under control.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the blood?

The prescription to reduce the inflammation may cause you to have more bleeding. Was the gastroenterologist who did the colonoscopy aware that you are still having bleeding problems. Is the doctor who perform the colonoscopy the gastroenterologist you are seeing on Monday?
Has the bleeding subsided at all today?
I actually had to go back to your original post to see if you had seen a gyn yet--I think I read that you have not.
If your bleeding has not increased and you feel relatively sure that you are going to be alright waiting till Monday, than see this doctor on Monday and if he said that you need to be referred to a Urologist for the bleeding, than make sure that he gets you an immediate appointment. (within 24-48 hours).
If the bleeding is continuing to increase, than I would suggest that you go straight the emergency room and make sure that they call for a urologist or a gyn to come see you. Make sure that they perform an ultasound and repeat the abdominal and pelvic cat scan. Do not leave that emergency room until you are satisfied that you have received the proper treatment and that they have obtained an immediate follow up appointment with whatever doctor they think you should see (urologist, gyn). Again immediate being within 24-48 hours.
You have suffered to long with this and you need answers.
Please let me know how you are doing.

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

My colorectal surgeon performed my colonoscopy. He's the one that said if the bleeding didn't resolve over the weekend that I should see a urologist. I mentioned this to my new gastroenterologist yesterday (who, by the way, I really liked. his incompetent and unprofessional staff is a whole different story, though!), but I did tell him that it wasn't nearly as bad as it had been, and that now I'm just seeing occasional blood clots. I'm also no longer waking up at night to go to the bathroom six or more times-last night, I only woke once. He didn't refer me to a urologist or rheumatologist right now-instead, he added another prescription (thank goodness I have good insurance, or I'd be paying over a $1000 a month on meds!), did blood work and had a chest x-ray done yesterday. He also referred me to an infectious disease specialist because I have positive reactions to TB tests, and the Crohn's meds he wants to put me on are known to increase your risk for developing TB. I was at his office for over 2 hours yesterday-he was very thorough!

I see a new primary care doctor on Monday. If the joint swelling and blood clots are still persisting, then I will ask her to make the referrals to the urologist and rheumatologist. By then hopefully my prescriptions will be making a noticeable difference in my health!

I'll post when I get my results! Thanks again, Brenda!

I am happy to finally hear some good news in your post. I am glad that you are satisfied with the gastroenterologist--he does sound like a consciencious doctor. I hope you have equal luck with your new primary care.
    Good luck next week

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Just came from my appt with my new primary care dr. I told her that I thought I was doing better, that I haven't had any blood clots or visible blood in my urine since Wednesday or Thursday of last week-however, she did another urine test and it's still showing blood. She's going to repeat again in 2 weeks.
Just when I was no longer worrying over it ! Now I'm concerned all over again!
Tomorrow morning she's sending me for complete blood work and x-rays of my left leg and lower back/spine (joint pain and swelling). I still don't have results from my colon polyp biopsy or the blood work my GI had done.
Should I still worry about ovarian cancer? Wouldn't the pelvic/rectal mri detect if I had something majorly wrong? I know the mri has missed my fistulas in the past, but surely it would note something serious like cancer?

    MissChooch

Is you primary care doctor affiliated with the same group as your gastroenterologist or the colon surgeon who did your colonoscopy?

Your poly biopsies result should be available within a week to ten days. You blood work should have been available the next day. Some blood work does take a little longer because it is sent out to an outside labs.

If your urine is still showing trace blood, why did this primary care not refer you to a urologist? The trace blood could mean that you may have cisitis (sp). I believe it is inflammation of the bladder. The other question I have is why this doctor could not have performed your blood work at the office?
I would think that the MRI would have detected a pelvic tumor; however, if you are still concerned, than I would suggest that you make an appointment with a gyn.
I feel your frustrations--sometimes when you think that you are actually getting solutions, than you find yourself walking out of the appointment with more "why" questions.

Do you have a follow-up appointment with your gastroenterologist? If not call the office to inquire about your lab results--request that they fax the report to you or if you are near by, go pick up a copy for your records. If it has been a week since your colonoscopy, than by all means call the surgeons office and request the biopsy results.
Please write to let me know how you are doing.

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Thanks Brenda. I called my surgeon's nurse and found out my biopsy was benign, so that's good! I was 99% sure it would be, as I didn't have any polyps at my last scope 3 years ago and I know it takes awhile for them to become cancerous (if they do)-but, there was still that small part of me that worried about it as the days kept going by without any word!

I also called my GI's office and left a message asking about results from the blood tests they did-still haven't heard back from them. I also asked both offices (colorectal surgeon and GI) to fax all reports to my primary dr.

Went and had more blood tests this morning and x-rays of left knee and lower back. I have no idea why I haven't been sent to a urologist. That's the 3rd urine test that's come back abnormal. Granted, this time it didn't show any infection, just blood.

I have a follow-up with my primary on Nov. 4 and my GI in January. My primary is located in my hometown, all others are located in a larger city-none but the infectious disease specialist and GI are in the same group.

I hope to get some answers soon! In the meantime, I have felt somewhat better I think because of my new Crohn's meds. My joint pain isn't as bad (although my primary thought my knees sounded awful), and I think the pressure in my pelvis has subsided a little. At least I'm not having to constantly urinate any more!

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

    Ms Chooch,

Time to find a ob/gyn. Call your primary care and find out who they recommend for their patients.

The blood clot could also be because they removed some polyps--were you instructed not to use any aspirin or aspirin containing products after your colonoscopy. There is a chance that you could bleed after a polyp is removed, so you must not use anything that contains aspirin for two weeks.

I still think you should be seen by a really good ob/gyn. Call the primary care's office and leave a message with the doctor that you want a referral to an ob/gyn and would the doctor please request an urgent appointment-for you to be seen within a weeks time.
Let me know how you do.

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

I was told not to use anything like ibuprofen, but to use Tylenol if I needed it. I haven't used anything but my prescription meds since my scope, so I don't think the blood could be from that.

My primary dr thought I could possibly have a kidney stone that was causing abdominal and pelvic pain and the microscopic blood, but I'm doubtful about that, too. I've heard kidney stones are excruciating, and I'm not in that kind of pain. My pain is fairly constant, not intermittent and while it hurts, I wouldn't call it excruciating. Also, it doesn't hurt or burn when I urinate. Plus, I read online that if your blood is in clots, that rules out kidney stones.

I still don't know the results of any of my blood work. I hate how they make you wait until your follow-up appt. to get results! I've had abnormal blood test results in the past because of my Crohn's and had to wait for those results, but they would call me before my scheduled appt in 2 weeks if the results were seriously abnormal, right? (In case you can't tell, I'm really starting to stress!)

    Re: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

    MissChooch,

If your primary was working on the theory that your problem is a kidney stone, than why did she not refer you to a urologist? I agree, kidney stones from what I understand are extremely painful, however, you could have a very small one that you may have passed this morning. (of course I do not believe your blood clot this morning was because you passed a small stone)
Did you call the primary doctor's office today? If not, call and request the doctor to return your call. Find out what your blood work showed, inform her that you have now had another blood clot this morning and insist on being referred to a urologist and a ob/gyn.
If she does not want to refer at this time, then pull out your yellow pages or go on the computer and look up urologist and ob/gyn and start calling around. Tell the office staff that you really need an urgent appointment, speak with the office nurse if you have to and make your own appointments.
Your problem has gone on long enough and it is now time for some answers.
I agree that if there was anything really abnormal with your blood work, than I am sure that the doctor would call you.
Let me know if you are successful in getting appointments with a urologist and/or a ob/gyn.
