Anemia and Cancer

Has anyone been treated for anemia before you were actually diagnosed with cancer? I was diagnosed with anemia several months and ago and have been taking folic acid. I recently had some bleeding while going to the bathroom and now my doctor wants me to have a colonoscopy to rule out colon cancer. She said she would not be concerned normally but with anemia she said i have to have further testing.

Re: Anemia and Cancer

That was not my experience. The idea of the colonoscopy, and I had one too when I was anemic, is to find out WHERE the blood loss is coming from. For me, it was totally from my menstrual periods as I had fibroids. You can have rectal bleeding from a hemorrhoid, lets say, and certainly that is not cancer, but it will be seen when a colonoscopy is done.
Are you on an increased dosage of an iron supplement?

Re: Anemia and Cancer

No on my last visit with the hematologist. .she just put me on folic acid since it was low. My hemoglobin at that time was a 12 (borderline ) so she said I could wait until next visit to see if my numbers, improved before taking iron since iron is usually hard for me to tolerate. I have been just improving my diet at this point. I just have no energy.
