Mom diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer, cancer in low part of rectum

my mom was diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer.the cancer is very low in her colon, so the concern is that there may not be enough tissue to reconnect after they remove part of her colon, she of course does not want to live with a bag at her stomach for the rest of her life. we have read about cryosurgery and radio surgery where they use radio waves on tumors, and are really considering taking a second approach other than removing part of her colon. we are also considering doing the radio surgery to reduce the size of the tumor, and then remove it so that less colon tissue needs to be removed. our other concern is we want to bring her to a cancer center, not a general hospital since her doctor is not a specialist in her problem. we are from fort myers, florida. can anyone please give recommendations as to where we can take her? we want to do it in the next few days.

    thank you.

Re: Mom diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer, cancer in low part of rectum

I'm sorry to hear of your Mom's diagnosis. Please don't let the fear of a colostomy jeopardize her life. It is important for her to be able to have a choice in the decision but her life is a priority here. I also had very low rectal cancer and after my surgeon tried his best to "spare" me from having a colostomy, after a couple of surgeries I did eventually end up with one. After a relatively short adjustment time - fortunately I was in good physical shape and also ready to take on this challenge to save my life - my colostomy is a non-issue in my life. I'm very active - swimming, running, hiking, biking, golfing, scuba diving, cross-country skiing, hot tubbing and anything else I choose to do - and I wear exactly the same clothes as I did before. I'm also very active in my local chapter of the United Ostomy Association and have written acticles for their newsletter. I hope your Mom can find a way around this if there is one that will ensure the cancer is eliminated but please think about this carefully. Please don't hestitate to ask any questions.
