I am also going for mine on 5/25...six months out. I too would like any helpful hints from those of you going through it. I know it is sometimes a tough start... I am you have accidents? In other words, should I run out and get some Depends???

Thanks for any advice you have to offer. Good luck to you tahb...are you having an x ray before your surgery?

    Take care,

    Hey TAHB and Cats:

YES get some Depends. Chances are you will have some accidents as your bowels adjust to functioning through your rectum again. Expect to have to retrain your bowels. And, depending on how extensive your resection was, you will in all liklihood have many, many bowel movements... diarrhea... until your colon readjusts. For me, the oozing never stopped, unfortunately, and then my anastamosis was so close to my sphincters and kept stricturing or closing up which led me to painfully dilate daily. Despite the dilations, I was still the size of your pinky finger and had to use a water bag enema EVERY day to evacuate. I had to go back to a permanent colostomy.

I am sure that your experience will be much better and most importantly successful. But, you will still need to retrain your bowels. So, buy the depends to keep on hand at home. The hospital should provide when you are there. Also, consider buying some diaper rash cream to protect your skin, and some baby wipes. Otherwise, your anus and surrounding will become very sore. I was given a product called Proshield Plus Skin Protectant. It was great because you can apply it even on wet or dry skin, and it forms a barrier.

The reversal was NOTHING like the resection surgery... although I know others on the board, like Maz, had a bad experience. But MOST reversals are easy for you and the surgeon. It's just the weird sensation of retraining the bowels. But nothing that is impossible. I was in the hospital for 3 or 4 days after the surgery.

I can't think of anything else right now, but feel free to ask specifics.

    Good Luck.
