Question Anyone Have Narrowing Of The Colon?

Good morning all. I went last week for a routine colonoscopy because I haven't had one in over 15 years and I knew it was way overdue to have one.

When I awoke, the nurse told me they could not complete the procedure because of "narrowing of the colon".

Has anyone else been told their colon was too narrow for this test?

I do not have any constipation problems unless I take some meds, such as a pain pill for my back.

I take Amitriptyline, same thing as Elavil, and I read where it can cause this narrowing of the colon.

I go this coming Monday for a barium enema....

I guess I am worried about being told I have colon cancer.

We all dread the "C" word. I know colon cancer is very treatable IF it is caught in time.

Any replies will be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks to all...

Re: Anyone Have Narrowing Of The Colon?

I was told that I had a thickening of the colon wall due to inflammation. Many things can cause inflammation. It also left my colon to narrow to complete the colonoscopy. I don't know if thickening of the colon wall and narrowing is the same thing, even if the end result is the same. It is interesting that they did not say you had an obstruction which would be a large polyp or tumor. I think if that were the case they would have said an obstruction. If you are on medication that can cause constipation over a long period of time I think your risk of diverticulitis could be increased. Diverticulitis can cause inflammation and also become a serious problem. I think you will need further advice from your doctor regarding diet (high Fibre? Low residue?) and have a strategy to let your bowel rest and open back up and then have a strategy to prevent it from happening again if you are continuing with medication that caused the problem to begin with. It is important to stay on top of this and follow up with your doctor.

Thanks for your reply

Hello and thanks for your reply. I already knew that I have Diverticula. I was diagnosed with it back in the 80's.

The Dr. may have used the word 'obstruction' but the Nurse wrote "narrowing of the colon" on my discharge papers. I don't even remember the Dr. talking to me afterwards. I am just going by what the Nurse wrote on my discharge papers.

My hubby was there but he had a stroke in 2001 and still has a problem remembering "everything" that was said in a conversation...

I do not take any meds that cause me constipation. I am not on any Narcotic meds. I have, on occasion, had to take one, and it would constipate me, but I haven't had a Narcotic pain pill in over a year. Monday isn't too far away so I should find out soon.

Hope you had a good T'giving....
