why would feces come out rectum if I have an ileostomy

is it actually feces or mucous? I had a colostomy and it was a couple months later that I felt pressure and the urge to "go". I told myself thats silly, there's nothing there, but sat on the toilet and lo and behold, out came something. Its common to have the mucous lining kind of slough off and pass. Some will irrigate to clean out the rectum, but it didn't bother me so much.

thank you peacefrog for responding. It really was feces! I had the test to see if I was ready for a reversal and they shot alot of fluid up my stoma. I had it pouring out my rectum then. I was told I was not healed enough to have the reversal at this time. I have to go back in 3 months to try again. 3 weeks later, there it came again!.. My wife seems to think it could be left over matter from the test. Has anyone had this problem? It was only the one time but then my bag was empty. After a few hours the doc on the phone told me to continue with alot of fluid and to lay down. My bag started to fill and I guess I may have had a clogged stoma. I don't know just so frustrated. Any one with these problems let me know ok?

the same thing happened to my mother and the stoma nurse told her it was natural and was stools that had been left in her bowels and that it would soon stop

I had my ileostomy for 10 months. Occasionally I would have a small amount of stool pass thru. I would feel a sudden urge to go and then some would pass through. My surgeon told me that this can happen and is normal. Hope your doing ok with your ileostomy!
