Unhappy failed colonoscopy

I have had 2 previous routine colonoscopies. Both were uneventful - no polyps, no complications. Yesterday, the doctor could not complete the colonoscopy, because he said there was a sharp turn and as much as he tried, he didn't want to perforate the colon. He even switched to a smaller tube, but he couldn't get through (less than 1/2 way). Needless to say, I was very upset. The doctor reassured me that since I had 2 colonoscopies (the last one 5 years ago), the possibility of having a tumor is very very small. I have to see him again in 2 weeks, where he will probably schedule a virtual colonoscopy. The only problem with this is that if there is a polyp, they can't remove it. I still can't undertand how my colon could change in 5 years. It doesn't make any sense to me. Also, this time it was very painful, unlike the other times. All that prep for nothing.

Re: failed colonoscopy

I also had two failed colonoscopies. Then I got very sick 8+ years later, spent 6 1/2 wks in the hospital. They finally completed a colonoscopy. To find I had stageIIIb colon cancer. Came very close to losing my life. I didn't follow through after the first two attempted colonoscopies. Wasn't a smart decision. If I had done something about it then, I could probably have saved myself major surgery & chemotherapy!! When they attempted the first two colonoscopies I remember waking up during the procedure feeling like they were hitting a brick wall. The pain was excruciating!!
Please follow up early detection is so very important. If your doctor can't do a complete colonoscopy there are other doctors that can. I'm a firm believer in second opinions. I know the prep isn't great. Research the Internet there is lots of information on new preps and information to help you get through it easier.
Good luck, my thoughts & prayers are with you.
