Howdy from Texas

While researching the length of recovery time after kidney surgery I came across this site. So I thought I'd say howdy to all and say why I'm here.

The 15th of last month I had a radical Nephrectomy on my left Kidney. The kidney itself was pretty much non-working and the tumor attached to it was 13.5 CM long and 5 CM wide. The surgeon took the tumor, Kidney, adrenal gland, 2 lymph glands and as he put it, a little extra tissue surrounding the area.

The pathology report showed the tumor to be cancerous, but fortunately all cancer was contained within the tumor, so no further treatment is necessary.

In reading over some of the post here, I can definitely empathize with those that are have pain and discomfort following surgery. It is getting better each day though, so I figure if we keep a good thought and don't push too hard we'll be kickin around pretty good not too long from now.

Say it was the right side and thats pretty much me 15 years ago!

I did the follow up CT scans for two years then decided that if it came back I was pretty much goosed so deided it wasn't worth worrying about and if it came back it would let me know. So I haven't bothered with follow ups and didn't mis the annual worry worry worry period around the time of my CT scans!

Still rockin!

Re: Howdy from Texas

So I had surgery on 10/24 open surgery -nephrectomy. I'm wondering how long the recovery time is, I don't feel like I"m even close to ready for work but I"m due back right after thanksgiving. That is only 5 weeks and a couple of days from the surgery. My doctor will extend but I"m wondering if that is normal? Should I already be in good shape for work?

Even though I've been through the surgery I'm far from being an expert on healing times.

My best guess is, I think it would depend on the physical condition you were in prior to the surgery. Myself as an example;
Before my surgery I was walking 6 miles a day and working out with weights 4 times a week, along with doing leg lifts and stomach crunches. I've been doing these things since I was in my 20's and just kept doing them even after I retired from the military.

Hang in there, you'll get better.
