Dreadful Start to the New Year
My closest friend has just been diagnosed with lung cancer, she has gone downhill rapidly since developing a cough on holiday in September and now has trouble with day to day tasks, she has terrible aches in her spine and legs and is generally feeling tired all of the time. She has an appointment on Friday for further tests does anyone have experience of similar symptoms? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Hi Dawn, sorry about your friend. I hate it every time I read of a new person having to come here because either they or someone they care about has LC....or suspects it.
Yes, my hubby had that same trouble. Spine and legs. His legs hurt unbearably. Please suggest to your friend that she get a PET scan or at the very least an MRI of her spine to see if there are lesions to the bone. That's what Bud found out. Although his primary tumor in the left lung was in remission, the cancer had moved elsewhere. The sooner they can control this the more comfortable she will be. They might suggest radiation and chemo. The radiation helped my husband for a time, but ultimately, the monster was too strong and he too weak. Please keep us posted on how your friend is doing. God bless you for being such a friend to help.

Dear Jan,

Thank you so much for the reply it does help to just to speak to someone, I just feel so helpless and wish there was something more I could do to help her, I will just pray for a positive outcome on Friday.

I am so sorry for your loss and may God be with you for any difficult days ahead.

Hi Dawn,
My husband has SCLC and he also to this day has terrible pain in his back and legs. He refuses to take anything other than vicadin since he had a bad experience when the doctor insisted he take morphine for the pain.
What type of lung cancer? What a good friend you are and hope this posting board helps you. What stage?

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Hi Kim,

We don't know what type/stage at the moment, the results of an xray last Wednesday were back with the doctor on Thursday and she was told that she has a tumour on her right lung. She has an appointment tomorrow morning with a specialist so hope to find out more. She lost a lot a weight around 18 months ago for no reason but had no pain/symtoms. We were on holiday three months ago and a couple of days before we were due to fly back she developed a cough, which only lasted a few days but left her feeling as if she had pulled a muscle in her chest, after this she developed pain in her spine and legs and weakness/tiredness in general.

I am so glad to have found this site, some of the messages have reduced me to tears, it is blessing to have so many people kind enough to spend time helping others.

Thank you,
Dawn x

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Dawn, you hang in there. And your friend is blessed to have you. Sadly, one of the toughest things to tolerate through this whole process is the waiting period. If all she had was an xray please encourage her to insist on a CT at the very least, a PET at the best.

Just today I read in the paper that they are developing a pretty effective genetic test for lung cancer. They said these 5 genes are effective in determining whether a person will be prone to getting lung cancer, and if already dx'd, what their chance of survival and treatment success is. They said that staging is ineffective because sometimes people are dx when the tumor is still very small but turns out to be very agressive and in the long run, a high risk for ineffective treatment options and early fatality. They said best case scenario the low risk group lived avge of 40 months, the high risk 20. That's what Bud lived. 20 months after official dx.
Kygal...Pat, you prove them all wrong girl! You go for for life! I have been praying for you and hoping for continued results. We need sucess stories to keep the folks going. I wish I could just drive over the bridge from Evansville to Henderson and figure out a way to find you and give you a big giant hug....

I need to get to bed soon, tomorrow I go for labs...yep Kim, I'm finally doing it....keep putting it off.

Love, peace, prayers and healing....

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Yes, I too agree with Rockie/Jan that you must get your friend to have a CT and Petscan. A lung x-ray won't tell you what type of lung cancer at all. My husband had to have a biopsy after the scans to determine the type of lung cancer.
Thanks for sharing the article in the paper about testing...interesting.

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Hi All,

Update from todays hospital visit and still a waiting game, the results from the xray show multiple nodules in both lungs,(not sure what this means - said they are unsure yet! ) she has a CT scan booked for Monday and a follow up on Friday with the specialist. I find the waiting unbearable...

Huge thanks for your support,

Dawn x

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Good deal. I know Dawn....sigh....the waiting IS unbearable. Try to keep busy and your mind off of things. I know it's easier said than done. When my hubby was going through all of the diagnostics, my little dog went for a LOT of walks...LOL. Bugs got used to that after a while....

Take care, let us know how things go.

Hugs to you!!

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Hi All,
Two weeks since my last post and how things have moved on! The cancer has spread to bones, liver and there are multiple nodules in both lungs, she has gone downhill rapidly in the last couple of weeks and was taken into hospital on Friday. She is on Morphine for the pain and awaiting radiation treatment on the bones. Everyone feels so helpless we have been told that nothing can be done, how do you cope with something like this?

Re: Dreadful Start to the New Year
Dear Melissa,
Thank you for your kind words, the radiation was done two weeks ago but not had much effect as yet, she is at home now but not very well at all.

Such a difficult time for all concerned!

How you find the time and energy to offer such kind words of comfort and support with so many things going on in your own life is truly a blessing.
Take Care, Dawn x
