Elevated CA-19 Levels after Cycle 1 of Chemo

Family member diagnosed with stage iv bile duct cancer - in liver and lymph nodes in abdomen. At diagnoses CA-19 tumor marker was at 5600. After first cycle of Fulfirinox and labs prior to Cycle 2 of Fulfirinox, the CA-19 ROSE to 6,800. Some tell me there is sometimes a spike in the CA-19 after the first cycle. Has anyone heard of this? Thank you.

Re: Elevated CA-19 Levels after Cycle 1 of Chemo

After cycle 3 of chemo (Fulfirinox) CA-19 tumor marker continues to rise - and now at 9584. Anyone?? Is there a possibility it just take several cycles for the treatment to work? Or do we sit patiently and let imaging lead us to the next step? Doctor said they don't rely on CA-19 markers that much - but DO like to see them go down instead of up and everyones cancer reacts differently. Has anyone ever heard of this? Concerned as frrom what I've read it sound like the markers should start going down right away after chemo starts. Appreciate any input. Thank you.

I just joined this forum today. It is not unusual to see the CA19-9 levels rise after the first treatment or two. That is exactly what happened with my wife's Folfirinox treatments.

What RW said is what I've heard and read elsewhere, but it's not necessarily the norm. Just know that everyone responds differently.

CA 19-9 is a test to measure a protein released by the cancer cells. And it sometimes gets released when they die to the point it will be picked up on the test.

Looks like you've not added anything to this thread in a long while. How is it going now?
