    Switching from Folfirinox to Gemcitabine

My dad has pancreatic cancer and due a recent heart issue they started him on the Gemcitabine treatment until his heart was able to take the Folfirinox treatment and then they made the switch. The problem is that when on the Gemcitabine, his marker numbers were consistently dropping and eventually came down from 30,000 all the way down to 90. Then when we switched to the Folfirinox, the side effects were significantly worse and the marker numbers only got worse as well, along with some spreading in the CT scan. Has anyone else experienced anything similar and was it worth switching back to the original treatment? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Switching from Folfirinox to Gemcitabine

It's certainly worthwhile to go back to Gemcitabine. While FOLFIRINOX may be one of the best treatments we have, it does not work at all in many patients. If Gemcitabine was working, then it may still have legs for him.

But I would also say that if he was deemed strong enough for gemcitabine, he may want to instead try the combination therapy Gemcitabine+Abraxane. That combination therapy is often more effective than Gemcitabine alone as shown in this clinical trial.
