PSA went up to <.10 after 3 years of <.01

I had my prostate removed in 2015 and in 2016 when my psa went up to .03 at that piont I had radiation treatment. After that my test results have been consistent at <.01 Which is considered 0 by the doctor
I just had a psa test result of <.10
My appt with the doctor. is in 2 weeks to review the results, so I have time to over think everything.
Seems like if the test where less than <.10 it should be displaying a number without using a less than symbol, because the machine reads .01-4.0
I can't help but wonder if it was entered into the patient portal website wrong.
The other thing I'm being treated for skin cancer the non-serious type. I've been using Fluorouracil 5% cream for 4 weeks which is a chemotherapy type drug. Could that of effected the results?

Hi Kahps and welcome to the Board!

I suspect the wrong test was ordered: a conventional test instead of an ultrasensitive PSA test with a reliable range down to <0.01. I've been at this now for nearly 20 years, and the testing has been reliable, but not perfect. Occasionally the wrong test has been ordered, and once there was clearly a lab error, which really scared both my wife and me. I have also been given wrong results over the phone, but never actually printed wrong via my portal. You could simply call tomorrow, rather than waiting two weeks, and ask if the wrong test was ordered. It might be possible for the lab to use the same vial of blood but do a more sensitive test.

    Good luck! Jim

Thanks for the reply, sometimes all you need is the voice of reason.
I think I just needed to take a deep breath. I called the lab and the doctors nurse with questions and I got the same answer "you need to talk to the doctor we can't discuss lab results with the patient." Should known that would be the answer.
When I was seeing the oncologist for radiation treatment, he was sending me to a local medical group for a PSA test that only had a sensitivity down to .1 which he was fine with. After my radiation treatments where over with and I went back to my urologist he would send me to get my test at the same place he was practicing. Which has a more sensitive reading down to .01
So something as far as the testing must of changed since my last test. Maybe they got a new machine, a different standard was used or it's a typo. It is kinda curious it was reported as <.10 and not just <.1
I'll post a update after my appointment.

What a relief. They started using a different machine and reporting the results differently. I'm good to go. I'll get checked a year from now and another year after that and if all goes good it will be in remission.
What a long emotional road it's been.

Kahps, glad your are all well. Change of a machine and their screw up really can scare a patient needlessly. That should not happen.

Could you tell me how your surgery has been now that its been a few years?
Incontenence or ED issues and if not how long did it take to recover from each.

    Thanks!

Before I can answer that a little background on me is needed. My grandpa passed from prostate cancer, my Dad and 3 of his brothers have prostate cancer, so I always knew I had a bullseye on my back.
I had just turned 50 when I was diagnosed. My PSA was 4.3, I had stage 2 cancer with a Gleason score of 4 if I remember right. 11 of the 12 needle biopsy was positive for cancer.
After the surgery and 2 weeks after the catheter was removed, I developed bladder neck contracture. I wound up in the emergency room unable to urinate. A catheter was inserted for another 2 weeks and after it was removed within a week I ended up in the emergency room again with the same problem. That time my urologist was called in and he performed a procedure that opened up the bladder neck contracture. Very painful! Again I used a catheter strapped to my leg for another 2 weeks and within a week of it being removed, I was having trouble urinating. That time he secluded surgery in which he enlarged the bladder neck contracture. Guess what, that's right within weeks I was having trouble urinating. This time my urologist had me start self cathing once a day to keep the contractor open. After 2 months of self cathing, it worked. All good now.
As far as incontinence, very little but there are times it happens when I move just right. I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing depends the older I get.
As far as ED I had non-robotic nerve-sparing surgery. I have ED but I'm also on blood pressure meds which may be affecting it. I do have orgasms as good as before surgery. As time goes by things have improved a great deal.
Accepting your situation and coming to terms with it will allow you to move pass it and enjoy life. I'm not happy about having had cancer and whats it's done to me but I wouldn't change what I learned about myself and found out how strong my marriage is.
