Update - One Week and One Day After RPS - Doctor Visit Today

Good news...after undergoing the surgery on February 3rd, and being told by my surgeon (Dr. Scott Tully) that he spared the nerves and that my margins were clear, I went back to see him today. The pathology report indicated that the lymph nodes he took were clear, and there is no indication of cancer outside the prostate. He said there's a very, very good chance that the cancer was confined to the prostate and that I'm cured. Also, the report indicated Gleason 7 (3 + 4) with about 20% of prostate with cancer cells.

It was also great, but quickly shocking and painful, to have my catheter removed today. It's well worth the quick pain to be free of that.

So now it's all about rehab and follow-up for me. I'll continue to walk, do Kegel exercises, and avoid lifting. I'll also be wearing pads for awhile, which in the scheme of things is not a big deal. I'll be back to see Dr. Tully in one month. At that time, I'll also meet with the ED doctor. Dr. Tully has started me on Cialis for now, and I'll have more knowledge about where I am with sexual issues when I go back in a month.

I'm happy to share my experiences with anyone facing this surgery and recovery going forward. Thanks to all of you who have supported me with such valuable information and words of encouragement.

That about as good as you could hope for! First PSA test in about 8 weeks should be another reason to rejoice!

The only caution with the leg bag I heard is to not bind it tightly to the leg. The restricting of circulation can foster blood clots in the legs. This is a general risk for older people after surgery and walking keeps those calves flexing and the blood flowing. My bag rested on my ankle above my shoe. I wore it to work.

I used alcohol wipes to keep the ends of the devices clean.

    Hi Marq2! Excellent update! Congrats!

Following catheter removal, you may experience some degree of uncertainty about how quickly and completely return to continence will occur. Keep in mind that you have undergone a lot of neurovascular disruption which requires both healing and some "re-programming!" Most achieve reasonable continence by 3 months.

Keep a daily "pad" log. Instead of comparing day to day totals, make week to week comparisons. You will see true progress on a weekly basis! The most accurate way is to wiegh each pad and log 24 hour totals, then do weekly comparisons. I suspect that you will recover fairly quickly, so there is no good reason to purchase a scale (unless you already have kitchen scale)

Stay focused on the fact that each recovery day is slightly better than the previous!

Keep moving and keep us updated!

Excellent path report! Your primary treatment will have it's final chapter when you get back your undetectable PSA. You should get a copy of your complete path report for your records. It's much more important than your biopsy reoort.

Re: Update-One Week and One Day After RPS-Doctor Visit Today

Sorry to be so long in giving an update on my condition.

Due to COVID, I was delayed on getting my PSA test done. It's done, and I'm really, really happy to report that it showed a score of <.01.

I'm hopeful that I'm cured of this cancer. I had a great surgeon, great family and friend support, and outstanding support and information from this forum.

    Thank you!
