Cancer recurrence after 9 yers

At age 75 I was diagnosed with cancer following a biopsy which revealed a 7 on the Gleason scale. I was put on casodex for two weeks followed by 44 external radiation treatments. PSA readings measured in the low tenths until six years later when the readings progressed from 2.4 until 2 years later when it reached 7.6.. My doctor suggested lupron injections every three months with a diagnosis of cancer recurrence without recommendation of a biopsy which I insisted on. The results were not positive and bone and other body scans were negative. This left me perplexed but the doctor insisted that cancer cells are present and I completed a year of the lupron injection every three months followed with 4 PSA readings of 0.1

My last lupron injection was given 5 months ago and depending on my next PSA, it will be determined whether the injections will be resumed. I dread the continuation of Lupron with its side effects. I had expected the hot flashes to diminish or cease, but instead they occur with greater frequency. My breasts have increased in size equal to what a 12 or 13 year female may start boasting about. Vanity at age 85 is not an issue, but never the less is disconcerting.

Re: Cancer recurrence after 9 yers

It may be that some cells had escaped the prostate before you ever had the radiation and were lying in wait somewhere else all that time. It may still be too small to be detectable on a bone scan. Or it may be hidden in an hypoxic area of the prostate that wasn't biopsied. There's a newly approved C11-Choline PET/CT scan at the Mayo Clinic that may be able to locate it, but you'd have to come off hormone therapy and let your PSA increase again before it could be used. You might want to give Dr. Eugene Kwan's office a call in Rochester, MN to ask about it.

Tamoxifen seems to be the best cure for the gynecomastia (better than radiation or other anti-estrogens). You can ask your oncologist if it's OK to take with Lupron -- he might want to switch you to Firmagon.

Several guys in my PC support group swear by acupuncture for hot flashes. It seems to stop the runaway thermoregulatory process in the brain.
