Has anyone tried NOM (nonoperative management)?

I am interested in this information too. So if there is anyone out there please share. My surgeon told me there was a surgery i'd be out for 6 to 8 months, or do the chemo/radiation and a surgery for a year after my next two tests which are the mri of rectal cancer and the ultrasound of the pelvis. I forgot to ask him if I would end up with a ostomy bag after the first option but he mentioned the temporary bag with the chemo and radiation option. I need answers and advice from people who have gone through rectal cancer and the procedures just like others please help us.

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

When my husband was first diagnosed with rectal cancer the treatment plan was radiation and chemotherapy for six weeks, then a break , then surgery, then chemotherapy for six months.

The chemo wasn't all that onerous, he found.

He had a temporary ileostomy installed during the first surgery.

NOM was never considered in his case, but he was diagnosed as Stage 3 at the time.
