Post operative pain and gas (possibly Ileus)

My father was diagnosed with Colon Cancer 2 weeksago. His irregular bowels started on July 25th but we thought it was diarrhea. On 15th October there was blood in his stool and we did Colonoscopy and found a tumor in the colon which is malignant. Surgery was done yesterday.

Pls find details below:-
Colon: Tiny Hemmorhoids seen. A tiny polyp seen in the rectum. Circumfential, friable growth seen at 18 to 25 cm from Anal verge, Scope negotiable

CT of whole abdomen:
GIT There is irregular circumferential wall thickening of the rectosigmoid junction (segment length 8 cm) with narrowing of the lumen. Few small pericolic lymphnodes are also noted. Pericolic fat appears normal.
Final Impression: Neoplastic lesion involving thr rectodigmoif junction and sigmoid colon with small pericolic lymphadenopathy.
Pls correlate clinically

SPECIMEN: Colonoscopic Biopsy, Colonic Growth

Received 7 fragments of grey white tissue, largest measuring 0.5 X 0.2 X 0.2 cm. and smallest measuring 0.1 cm – all.

Sections show Colonic Mucosa with infiltrating nests of malignant glands lined by columnar epithelial cells with high nucleocytoplasmic ratio, hyperchromatic nuclei & prominent nucleoli. There is dense desmoplastic reaction.

Colonoscopic biopsy, Colonic Growth: : Adenocarcinoma , moderately differentiated (Grade 2).

Surgery done successfully yesterday and the tumor was of length 7 cm.

Post operation done on November 3rd 2010 he was in ICU till Nov 4th noon and then moved on to the room where he has gas and abdominal pain in addition to the surgical pain.

We did a CT which suggested dialtion of small intestine which looks like gas or Ilues. Yesterday they put a nasal tube and made him walk at the hospital. Today there is a 20 percent reduction. I have also put him on chewing gum once in two hours. BP is 140/80 sugar 225, pulse rate 80 and no fever. I am worried pls advise if this could lead to complications and suggest precautions if any and possible complications. He is in trmendous pain at the moment
