    Spitz Nevi or Melanoma?

I just recently had a suspicious mole removed and it was diagnosed as a spitz nevi. My dermatologist wasn't so reassuring on the diagnosis telling me that well if the pathologist says that's what it is then I guess we will have to go with that. He also said he got it all "just in case."

I think I should go for a second opinion because I have been reading about the spitz nevi diagnosis and it's a pretty hard to tell one from melanoma. I am seeing my GP about a CT scan I had on Friday, so I am going to ask him. I just wonder if I am being silly asking for a second opinion. What I read really makes me worried because most people that get these spitz nevi's are children or young adults. I am almost 30 years old. Also, they say most spitz nevi are also noduler and pink/red. Mine had the symptoms of melanoma (dark with light brown pigment bleeding into the normal skin, brand new mole, larger than a pencil eraser).

A second opinion is never silly. My experience is if you are not comfortable, GO FOR IT.

It will put your mind at ease.

Thanks Westllen. The second opinion is in the process. I just have to wait another 2 weeks. I am also waiting to see a specialist on the enlarged lymph node on my neck as well. Always waiting.

The "waiting" IS the hard part. Once you know, you can put a plan in place and move on with life. Stay positive

    Keep me posted.

no aimee, you're definitely not over-reacting going for a second opinion!!! and push for that CT scan too! melanoma is an extremely aggressive and fast spreading cancer. for some reason, a lot of doctors don't seem to be aware that melanoma can come back with no outward signs (suspicious moles), or of how quickly it can come back, or how quickly it can spread, so you really have to be firm with them about getting that CT scan!

i'm sorry. i don't mean to scare you or worry you anymore than you already are. i just hate to think of anyone getting bullied out of a test that could possibly save their life! that is what happened to my dad, and i don't want it to happen to anyone else! be firm, and make your doctors listen to you (after all, you ARE paying them to keep you in good health!).

good luck, and i really pray that everything is well with you!

    Re: Spitz Nevi or Melanoma?

    Thanks Mcr285,

I had the CT scan on my adomen only (not where my enlarged lymph node is) and everything looked fine. I did talk my dermatologist and he said that the pathologist does error on the side of caution, so that if they were unsure if it was a melanoma then they would say it was melanoma. He is having them have a second look for me. I am being pushy because my mother and her father were misdiagnosed as they had cancer and they are no longer with us. I have learned from everyone's mistakes and I am pushing my medical doctors to "make sure" as I have a history of cancer in my family.

My GP is still sending me to a specialist to have a look at my lymph node which has now decreased in size after being the size of a skittle for a year. I am keeping an eye on it as I know there are certian lymphomas that can show waxing and waning lymph nodes.

    Westllen,

No, I cannot see that being done unless they pretty much know the lymph node is cancer? In Canada (or at least at my hospital) it has to be ordered by a specialist. I do wonder though if the CT scan could miss some cancers.

Shoot, I forgot you aren't here in the states. They would have ordered this for you with having an enlarged lymph node.

    Keep me posted.

    Westllen,
Yeah that's the bad thing about the Canadian medical system eh? It's somewhat free, but we don't get the attention to detail that would come from from a paid per use medical system.
