Oh, this is such good, good, good news! I can hear the relief and joy in your words, and my own heart echos that! You and your wife certainly had Some one watching over you, and blessing every step you two have taken. What a blessing the MOHs surgeon was, and what an absolutely wonderful man for understanding your situation and be so willing to work with you.

Happy be-lated anniversary, and may this be just the beginning of a very long and wonderful life together! I am so very happy for the two of you!

Re: Brown stripe in finger, please help.

I'm a 32 yo caucasian woman. Three years ago, I began getting manicures, and when removing nail polish from one, noticed a light brown/tan streak down my right thumbnail. I thought nothing of it until a few months ago. I had happened to see an article on Bob Marley, and followed the links until I saw a description of subungual melanoma and its relation to nail stripes.

I went to a dermatologist who specialized in nails, and she said that with my risk factors (very light skin, single stripe down the thumb of the dominant hand) I need to be biopsied. She did say it was encouraging that it hadn't changed a ton in 3 years (I notice it more now, but I can't pinpoint if it's changed slightly), that the nail and cuticle looked healthy, and that I was young. She did tell me to prepare for the possible loss of part of my thumb but to try not to worry. I'm not on any medications and haven't been pregnant to my knowledge (other possible explanations).

There is apparently a specialist in the area who is very experienced in these cases, whom I have a consultation with in 2 weeks. (My original doctor met with me several weeks ago.)

Since roughly around the time of the first appointment, I have been having some discomfort under my right arm (in the armpit). I am tremendously worried that I have cancer and that this is a sign of lymph node involvement. However, I work with computers and it may be simply due to a lot of mousing recently.

The second thing that has been bothering me is that when taking photos of the thumb for the specialist, I pushed my cuticle back with my teeth. Immediately there was a raised, very white area roughly beneath the nail stripe on the cuticle, in sort of a small, shoe-horn shape. Of course, I am extremely worried this may be some kind of lesion beneath the skin, and it hasn't disappeared in about a week. In a ridiculous attempt to assuage my worry, I even bit and pushed at the left thumb cuticle to see if I could cause a similar effect, but no.

I am officially going crazy with worry. The survival rates for subungual melanoma look so terrible. I lost an immediate family member to a different cancer (one that was supposed to be slow growing, but was very aggressive in them and took their life). I feel so hopeless and discouraged (usually very optimistic), and I feel defeated already.

It's very encouraging to read stories of survival. Does anyone have an idea if I should be concerned about this raised white irregular area that popped up? Can your lymph nodes hurt or swell from worry, or simply from a cancer that has not reached them yet (instead of indicating infection, simply indicating a reaction to cancer that has not progressed badly)?

I hate that this is gripping me so hard, but I am honestly petrified about a loss of life or thumb (thumb being preferable of course to life) at 32. Any tips for the waiting period, or any comforting words, appreciated.

Re: Brown stripe in finger, please help.

Hello, I would first like to say from my knowledge a lymph node does not hurt if it is cancer, be worried if it does not show any sign of pain. Of course do not take my advice and look it up with a doctor.

How long have you had this stripe in your nail? I went through basically the same thing you are. It is terrifying, I would recommend you to see a Mohs surgeon asap. I can recommend you to the one my wife and I went to, he was nice and helped us out through everything. You can never be sure if it is benign or melanoma from looking at it, but I think that he could kind of tell, he told me not to be worried and he kind of hinted at he thought it was benign before we actually got the results of it.

I always wondered what they meant by your nail might grow back funny or not at all. Now I understand, my wife is basically 95% healed I'd say. Her nail has a white stripe down the side where it is growing weird and it is cut in half. The part where they did the biopsy never grew back. We still prefer to have surgery in the near future. But I'd say things like this for a few years are benign, especially if you have not noticed it changing in the last few years.

Also, does it affect your skin around your nail and your nail fold? if so then I also read once that 1 out of 3 is benign, which is still a good chance if you Pray. I want you to know we are here for you, God will definitely Bless you. There are wonderful stories that can come of this. but relax and Pray deeply. Keep us informed and get a biopsy asap.

Re: Brown stripe in finger, please help.

I've had a brown stripe in the middle of my thumbnail since I was little. No one has ever seemed concerned about it. I still have it and have been basically healthy my whole life.

Not sure if this helps but hope it does.
