Question Melanoma in situ

I was recently diagnosed with in situ melanoma on my lower leg from a biopsy. The doctor removed 3mm from the margins and said they came back clear. Initially on the phone, he told me that even though the standards of care are to remove 5mm from the margins, that it should be fine, although the decision is up to me. He said that he usually abides by the standards of care, but doesn't believe it is necessary for an additional biopsy. When I went in for my appoinment today to remove the stitches, I asked multiple questions about the additional biopsy. The doctor told me today that he recommends having the additional biopsy. I believe he is saying that to cover his bases. I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions/experience with this situation. I'm comfortable not having the additional biopsy since the margins were clear. I've also had a rough recovery. But I'm thinking of going for a second opinion.

Re: Melanoma in situ

I'm sorry you've had to experience any sort of diagnosis of melanoma, but I am happy that you have received clear margins. I had a melanoma 5 years ago, stage 1B, and know how frightening this diagnosis can be. If you feel comfortable with your doctor, that is huge. However, this is your body and your health and no one is going to be a bigger advocate for you than you. It never hurts to get a second opinion, and if it would put your mind at ease to do so than do it. This is really your decision. I would caution against going to doctors to try to "find" something, but if you simply want to get a second pair of eyes to take a look, then do it.

I wish you all the luck, but it looks as if you are handling this very well!
