Pretty freaked out. Please someone give me perspective?

So I've had this sort of gurgling/burping thing that's been steadily worsening for the past few years. I first noticed it a little over 5 years ago, but I think it might have been going on a bit longer than that. I had my first frank case of heartburn about 4 years ago and some, followed by the gurgling happening constantly after meals. The doctor then brushed me off (I was barely 30) and gave me 20 mg Prilosec, which stopped it at the time, but then I stopped taking it and continued to ignore my symptoms. As of last year, when I've tried it again, 20 mg Prilosec didn't really stop the burping (it's constant whenever I eat, and especially when I drink a lot of liquids, particularly coffee and alcohol). I also have occasional reflux/regurgitation. and when I lie down right after drinking water, it comes up a little in my throat.

A couple of times this year I had burning pain in my sternum swallowing (both after over-indulging over a weekend - one might have been from eating something really hot), but it went away after a couple of days. The last time it happened, I went to a PCP who told me to double my dose of Prilosec (which I haven't done yet) and not to worry about stomach cancer at the age of almost-34, especially with the duration of and only gradual worsening of my symptoms, but I've been freaking out ever since.

I also have noticed cloudy urine, with some particles in it. I'm terrified of proteinurea meaning advanced stomach cancer, but of course I haven't had it checked out yet.

I'm going to see a GI specialist next Monday (I finally have insurance as of last year), but I'm calling every day to see if he has an earlier opening. I'm terrified of what he's going to say, and even more terrified that he might brush my symptoms off. What if I've ignored the symptoms of stomach cancer and am now at stage IV or something?

I must also note that I'm in treatment for my anxiety problems, but until I get a dx I'm not going to have any idea what's realistic and what's not about my worries. I was hoping someone here could give me some kind of realistic idea of what could be going on with me. My boyfriend will leave me if I go on obsessing over this, although he's agreed to come with me to the doctor's. I'm afraid to eat because I hate thinking about the burping and slight regurgitation. Please can someone give me something resembling a reality check?

Hey. I got scoped. All they found was some duodenitis, which probably means dietary changes and stuff for me (or a course of h pylori eradication, depending on how the biopsies come out, but whatever). If anyone's reading these boards because they're afraid of something scary in their esophagus, please go get scoped. It really gives you peace of mind...plus, the sooner you get it done, the better you can get whatever is wrong seen to. Don't be me and freak out secretly under the surface for five years until you get seen. I seriously annoyed everyone I know with my fears of dying, and it's a real insult to folks who really are struggling with cancer.

Definitely get an endoscopy, that's the only way you'll know and be able to not stress about it, which ironically can make your symptoms worse. They can see what is going on and check for H.pylori to see if that could be what's causing the reflux. It's important to find the cause in order to prevent any further inflammation of the esophagus which could potentially cause further problems.
Try chewing on spearimint gum. Limit the alcohol. Don't eat heavy meals, especially before laying down. Some people say carbonated beverages help.
The cloudy urine could just be a urinary tract infection, have a urinalysis to rule that out. If that's the case nothing but a course of antibiotics to cure that. Good luck to you.

Re: Pretty freaked out. Please someone give me perspective?

Hi,

I had the very same symptoms and an Endoscopy showed I had H.Pylori and a Hiatal-Hernia.
There are a number of stomach symptoms that can have the same symptoms as yours.
Even my IBS can have similar, so don't go fearing the worst at this stage. Stomach Cancer would present itself with far more worrying symptoms,

Solofelix.

You may just need a different stomach med. I take Nexium. When my ins co refused to refill it due to the cost, I took some of my husband's Protonix. I may as well have taken a sugar pill - the Protonix did nothing. I had horrible indigestion. I went and saw my PC doc and she gave me every Nexium sample she had and then submitted paperwork to my ins co to cover it. I'm back on it now and the indigestion is gone.
Now I have stomach pain that from my research, sounds like I may have an ulcer. Made an appt with a GI doc for next week. You may want to see your doc about Nexium. While I'm having stomach pain, it is not the same as the indigestion. The Nexium did help that tremendously.

Best wishes,

JB
