    What is the chance of getting throat cancer?
    Hello,i am a gerd suffer and have been since i was about 10 yrs old.. I am now 29 and just in the last 6 to 7 months i have been having alot of problems with it. Started with a very sore throat that lasted for about 3 months.. went to ent doctor and run the light down my throat and said it was from reflux.. Put me on nexium twice a day and still didnt get better.. So now i'm taking cimetidine and it seems to be working better for me.. Now the sore throat is gone but i now have that lump/mucus feeling in my throat all the time..I have ben eating better foods and drinking mainly just water and it seems to help a little.. But i still get that feeling in my throat everyday.. My fear is THROAT CANCER... What are the chances of getting throat cancer from gerd? I have been very concerned about this.. i'm not hoarse or anything else.. the lump feeling in throat is only symptom i have now since the sore throat went away.. Anyone know if this is normal.. Being only 29 and a non-smoker.. I really hope its not throat cancer.. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

    I wouldn't worry too much yet about cancer. It's a concern, of course, but if your doctor wasn't worried, I wouldn't. You should ask the ENT what the chances are - I'd like to hear. I haven't found any stats, which could be partly because it seems LPR is only a "recent" phenomenon that researchers are looking into. Meanwhile, I know that your chance of esophageal cancer when you have just the GERD (no Barrett's) is about 0.2%.

    I used to be very concerned about this as well.

    From what I have been reading, the worrying isn't worth the small chance you will get it.

    I worry because my voice has changed so much and starting to sound hoarse all the time again. A nasal voice a lot too but sure allergies play a part. I don't think cancer rate if very high but a concern the longer you have it. My Doc usually wants to see me once a year if not sooner when I get so sick. Vocal cords are being stretched. Have had GERD/LPR over 10 yrs and hate it. Bummer
