possible thyroid cancer
I have been seeing a doctor about the hard goiter on my neck.
It is a 3x2 cm. fixed solid mass on the right side.
All my blood tests have come back normal and I had a thyroid uptake and scan
and it also came back normal which according to him is not a good sign.
I have to now have an ultrasound and see a specialist.
Should I pretty much prepare myself for it being thyroid cancer as from my doctor's comments
it doesn't look good or could it be something else.
I am male by the way which is another bad sign.

Re: possible thyroid cancer
I would get the second opinion from the specialist before worrying about it being cancer.

Re: possible thyroid cancer
Sorry you are going thru this. Most nodules are benign. Wait til you have an ultrasound and probably a biopsy to be sure. I had a 1cm cold, solid nodule and solitary, benign. Prior to the biopsy I was sure it was cancer, as it had all the signs, irregular, solid, on a destroyed thyroid. The biopsy showed I do have "hurthle cells" but they are not cancer. I do have to follow up in 4 months to make sure the nodule isn't growing etc. Hope you can get in soon for the ultrasound, its not knowing that drives us nuts!! but even the worst scenerio, cancer, its very treatable!!! one of the best cancers to get, if one must, is thyroid. Wishing you the best, cj

Re: possible thyroid cancer
I have the ultrasound Thursday and see the specialist on the 29th of this month.
but I am probably going to be worried sick until then.

Re: possible thyroid cancer
What really worried my doctor and also myself is that he could feel
the lump on my thyroid but the thyroid scan showed a normal sized

Don't worry, research! If it is cancer you need to find someone who deals with thyroid cancer all the time. The odds are in your favor that it is NOT cancer, but if it is you will want the best.

Re: possible thyroid cancer
Maybe this will help make you feel less anxious. I had nodules and went through with the ultrasound, needle biopsy and then surgery to remove the entire thyroid because all the test didn't identify cancer. The thyroid had a very small amount of papillary cancer that was self-contained to the thyroid and had not effected the lymph nodes -- thank God the big "C" was out of me. The surgery was easy and I was up and out grocery shopping the next day. I was told by my surgeon and Endo that the cancer was treatable and curable. So be calm and what ever it may be it can be treated possibly with RAI. Good luck and God Bless.

Re: possible thyroid cancer
First, what kind of doctor have you been seeing, an ENT? An Endo? That would make a big difference.

Second, the only thing an uptake scan can tell you is if a nodule is "hot" or "cold" if yours was "normal" then that does not mean cancer, a cold nodule has a slightly increased chance of being cancer (about 5% more). A nodule has a 90% chance of being benign---no matter what that dr, told you.

Most of these nodules are benign, and they often don't know until it's removed.

After the ultrasound, the will do a needle biopsy, and I wouldn't worry at all until after you get those results---it's a while off, now you have to take this one day at a time, and keep yourself busy, so your mind is off it.

In the absolute worst case, if it's cancer, most thyroid cancer is curable, and pretty easily......I had it 3 years ago, and my surgeon says I have a greater life expectancy than a sibling who never had it.

You are going to be just fine!
