Unhappy Follicular thyroid cancer - one week post completion thyroidectomy

Im a 24 yr old male in UK. Recently diagnosed with T2 follicular cancer in 4cm tumour. Had completion thyroidectomy last week, 4 weeks after hemithyroidectomy.

I am awaiting an appointment with nuclear medicine to discuss RAI.

I am pretty anxious about the cancer spread. I have had a sore sternum/right ribs for the last year (long before found thyroid lump). I know follicular spreads more commonly into bones, and so I just know this will be the case for me.

My question is has anyone else had follicular cancer that has spread to bones?

And also, does it really get treated successfully with RAI, as the research seems to say that distant mets massively worsens prognosis?

Any answers or experiences will be really appreciated.

So sorry about your diagnosis.

I had thyroid cancer 6.5 years ago. Fortunately, all is good. Your age means you will do great.

I've heard it's rare for the cancer to spread beyond the thyroid bed, but if it does, follicular does go to the bones.

They are pretty good with thryoid cancer in the UK, and I think you will do great. Your age gives you excellent statistics. If you can, if it's possible, you may want to have them send your pathology for a second opinion? Perhaps to US sloane kettering, or a top place in the US?

I'm guessing they will do RAI and perhaps regular radiation as well. There was someone named Archie on the regular thyroid board who found his thyroid cancer through a broken rib. He's much older--so different set of situation for him, has been trying some experimental treatments, and he was diagnosed around 6 years ago or so.

Take it one step at a time....hope all goes well.

Re: Follicular thyroid cancer - one week post completion thyroidectomy

I just want to add a note of reassurance. When my FNA came back with follicular cells and there was a small possibility my nodule was follicular cancer (it ended up not being that), my surgeon at Sloan (a top U.S. cancer hospital as Reece mentioned) said it would be extremely unlikely (although not impossible) for it to have spread out of the thyroid area. That was based on an ultrasound reading of a 3.5cm nodule, only slightly smaller than yours. At your age, I would think it would be very rare for yours to have spread like you're thinking.
