    thyroid cancer and liver/kidney nodule?

I just had a TT two weeks ago. Biopsy came back Papillary carcinoma with follicular variant. I am set to see the Nuclear Medicine specialist in 5 days to see what the course of action will be (my surgeon advised I will need RAI).

Two years ago I had a CT Scan of neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvis, when I originally presented with a sensation of a lump when swallowing, body aches and lethargy.

Multiple bilateral thyroid nodules (largest being 1.9cm).
Bilateral neck lymph nodes (largest being 2 cm.)..none pathologic in appearance.
Three small low density nodules in right hepatic lobe, all around 1 cm and equivalent to solid tissue.
Left kidney 2 cm angiomyolipoma and a 1.5 cm Bosniak Type1 cyst.

After a 6 month follow up of an ultrasound everything was left to watch until two years later(approx. 4 months ago)...

I went back to my ENT and presented with a goiter and severe lethargy (among a hundred and one other symptoms). The ENT biopsied my thyroid and it resulted in a Hashimotos diagnosis.

The ENT then sent me to an ENDO who I convinced to do a FNA of the nodules in my goiter.

Two weeks ago after the FNA they quickly followed up with a total thyroidectomy and I unfortunately got the above mentioned cancer result.

Sorry.... my long winded question is....has anyone else presented with thyroid nodules and or the other nodules and what came of it? Or, is there a relation that I should be looking at? The other stuff was swept under the rug a year and a half ago and then with the thyroid issues ...I can't believe that they are not related but maybe I am just over reacting?

PLEASE if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated! Any answers at all!

Thank you so much for your time!

Re: thyroid cancer and liver/kidney nodule?

Hi, I don't know if it is the same but, I have several thyroid nodules and cysts. I also happen to have breast cysts. I might have ovarian cysts and renal cysts, not diagnosed yet, but... Anyway, my mom asked after the ultrasound "Is your body producing cysts and nodules allover?!"

Also, I heard that a full body or abdomen MRI will ALWAYS show an abnormality. Nothing is perfect including our body, so, it's more common to find a few nodules during an abdomen imaging than not finding...

So it could be about the body but I would ask the doctor. Anyway, I hope you are doing fine

I'm not sure what you are asking about?

In terms of thyroid cancer, it's usually found by the nodule, no blood work can detect it. If the nodule is over 1cm they usually do an fna and determine the next step from there. In your case they waited, I know Canada has good thyroid cancer care, so maybe there was a reason for them believing it was benign.

Most nodules are benign,--80%---and waiting is usually ok as it's a very slow growing cancer if it is cancer. If you have a multinodular goiter, with several nodules, it's usually benign as well--perhaps this was why they waited?

That being said, this is a very easily treatable cancer, in fact many times the surgery is the cure, and RAI is just a double check to get rid of all tissue to ensure no recurrence. You are going to do well!
