Unhappy Confused, how could they NOT know if it's cancer?

I have been diagnosed complex atypical hyperplasia. I am 28, overweight with a LOT of health problems (type 2 diabetes, gallstones, enlarged fatty liver, enlarged spleen, sleep apnea, ovarian cysts, etc). Below is what my doctor wrote, can someone explain how they don't know if it's cancer or not? I have to get a hysterectomy, which was the only option (that I know of). Can they somehow remove the thickened endometrium? I've had thickened for 10 years, abnormal bleeding, bleeding during sex, dull pain...

As far as your ovarian cysts go, the ultrasound does show cysts up to 4cm in size on one side, and 3cm on the other. These don't appear too concerning.
The ultrasound appearance of the uterus and the uterine biopsy results are concerning though. It has taken a while to get the results because the biopsy was sent to Stanford for another opinion and I was just called with the results today. The pathologists agree that you have "complex atypical hyperplasia" of the endometrium (the inside lining of the uterus), and they cannot with certainty rule out a component of endometrial cancer, although they did not directly see that. Complex atypical hyperplasia basically means that the endometrium has grown, probably as a response to estrogen stimulation, and has a 30-40% chance of progressing to cancer. The best treatment for this is a hysterectomy - to surgically remove the uterus. This is more complicated in you because you are young, have not had children, and your size and diabetes make surgery more complicated.
I am going to talk to the GYN oncologists about your case for more input.
Please page me at the above number at any time, and we can talk.
I'm so sorry to be delivering such news over email, but I though you would like to know right away.
    We'll talk soon,
    Dr. S*****

Re: Confused, how could they NOT know if it's cancer?

    Hi,
I just read your post. I myself was overweight and had a lot of pain, and clotting and heavy bleeding with my period. My dr. told me that when I went through menopause it would all be okay. I had the hyperplasia diagnosis and no one told me a thing. I could have been a stick on a tree.

After ignoring it for another 6 years at he age of 61 I started bleeding again and went to the dr. He did some testing and said not to worry. Whatever you do, don't believe everything they tell you. Get a second opinion Please. They probably don't want to do a hysterectomy, because you don't have children. I was lucky to have had mine and it did turn out to be cancer for me. I had the hysterectomy and the dr. didn't know what he was doing he told me I was fine one day and the next I had cancer. go figure. I am hoping that what you have is minor and doesn't take much surgery to fix for you.

My only advice to you that I will stick to is get a second opinion. My cancer turned out to be stage 3C, ready my blog and you will see how mine turned out. I hope for the best for you. I went through 38 treatments of radiation hell. I have after effects from the radiation still after being done in Nov. I suppose they will be for a while. I have to have paps done every 4 months on the only part left to me, the vagina and bloodwork every 4 months and cat scans every 3 months. I believe that it will re appear somewhere, but I have put my faith in God and all the people that have been so kind on here and the people that have added me to their prayer chains. Great site and wonderful people here. santee
