    Cancer Coming Back.

Is cancer like a stroke or heart attack? If you have it once your odds of it happening again goes up quite a bit?

Apples and oranges, so to say.

I would think it depends on what kind of cancer and if was isolated, encapsulated, what stage, slow growing, tendencies, etc.

I don't think cancer usually "happens again".

The problem is that its just tough to be sure that you extinguished it all during treatment.

With many cancers, a little bit can escape the treatment, and eventually come back years later.

That's why cancer patients go back for checkups often for many years.

Can't cancer get reduced to levels the body can destroy itself?

A friend I once had died of cancer at 31. She had breast cancer 3 times. It's horrifying that cancer can win against someone that young yet old enough to have fully developed immune system.

Nothing about cancer is fair. Some are genetic, within our genes and passed on. Breast cancers are one.

    Re: Cancer Coming Back.

Some cancer patients can survive for many years after treatment. Survival rates have really improved over the years, with more effective treatments.

Most cancer treatments are measured by their success at how many months/years of progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS).

It used to be "dying of cancer". Today, in many cancer cases, it is "living with cancer".

    Re: Cancer Coming Back.

Do cancer treatments like chemo or radiation damage the immune system enough that if all cancer isn't killed the first time it becomes a huge advantage for its progression when it gets back up to speed?
